How An Ordinary Woman Became Godmother To A Cruise Ship

With Anthem of the Seas set to launch next week, we took a look at the launches of previous Royal Caribbean ships – and their godmothers! Kristin Chenoweth was godmother to Quantum of the Seas, Princess Fiona christened Allure of the Seas, and Elizabeth Hill is godmother to Independence of the Seas… Don’t know who Elizabeth is? Then read on for our interview with her – and find out how an ordinary woman received the honour of becoming a cruise ship godmother!   So how did you end up being named godmother to Independence of the Seas? My then 12 year old daughter Alicia was off school and saw Sir Steve Redgrave on Loose Women. He was looking for a woman who had done something good for the community. I was a founder of a charity on our farm for people with learning disabilities, children excluded from school and people with mental health problems. They did land-based activities and we helped many of them to gain qualifications and into employment. My daughter, unknown to me, entered a 100 word essay about why she thought I should be godmother. I received a call and thought my daughter had entered me into a reality television programme. Finally they convinced me otherwise and I and three other prospective godmothers were flown in a private jet to see the ship in its final...

Five Of The Most Expensive Hotel Suites in the UK (and the cruise suites that we think are better!)

Some of the most expensive hotel suites in the UK certainly don’t disappoint in the swankiness stakes. Only the finest features, the most sumptuous fabrics and the very best views are allowed to grace these exquisite hotel rooms; with anyone lucky enough to enjoy a stay set to wallow in unimaginable luxury. The sad news for those of us who aren’t a) a member of the Royal family (and we mean top-level Royals, not distant ‘Made in Chelsea’ cousins) b) the inventor of the iPhone/internet/insert vital modern-day invention here or c) the founder of an aerospace manufacturer is that the...

A Solo Exclusive Cruise Ship

There has been lots of news in the river cruising world over the last week! So here is a round-up of the biggest stories…   Scenic Tours have ordered two new ships for 2016- 2017 season. This is in addition to the recently announced Scenic Aura and Scenic Spirit which are also on order for 2016. All four will be built to Scenic “space ship” standard, which has suites that are over 50% larger than those on Scenic’s previous boats.   Tom Harper River Journeys has revealed their plans to build a new river ship which will cater predominantly to solo travellers. The ship will be called the MS Birdsong and will offer 132 square foot cabins – without the usual single supplement charge! The ship will also have French balconies in cabins as standard and have one of rivers largest fitness centres and wellness centres on-board. Sounds like bliss to us!   AmaWaterways has entered a partnership with Backroads to give their guests expert led cycling excursions. This way guests can see more of the cities they visit by cycling around the area whilst still receiving expert commentary. The excursions will include several expert trip leaders, flexible itineraries, custom titanium bicycles and a range of cycling routes that will suit guests – whether they’re Lance Armstrong or those that prefer a slower pace!   CroisiEurope have also announced...

H.M to Name Britannia

The internet has been ablaze lately with rumours as to the identity of who will be naming P&O’s latest ship Britannia, with the leading theory being that it will be none other than H.M Queen Elizabeth II herself! These rumours, which started off on Facebook before quickly spreading to cruise forums all over the internet, had been fuelled by the fact that on the official website of The British Monarchy her schedule shows the Queen as visiting Hampshire on the 10th March 2015, coincidentally the same day P&Os Britannia is being named. www.CRUISE.co.uk are now happy to confirm that...

‘The Queen’ vs The Queen

The big news this week has  to be the fact that P&O have announced H.M The Queen will be naming  their newest ship Britannia. This wont be the first time the Queen has christened a cruise ship; she named both the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth for Cunard but this will be the first time she’s named a P&O ship since the Oriana in 1995. Asking Royalty to name your cruise ship is a time honoured tradition dating back centuries but not all Cruise Lines seem to be as proficient at it as others.  Take Royal Caribbean for instance. Not being able to get any real royalty they had to ask Princess Fiona (from Shrek!) to name Allure of the Seas back in 2010. It has to have annoyed P&O that they haven’t had any ‘real’ royalty since ’95 though. Whilst P&O haven’t had to resort to fictional characters to name their ships  it’s clear that ‘losing’ the Queen to Cunard must have hurt. So much so in fact than in 2008 P&O had Helen Mirren, flush from her Oscar winning role in The Queen , name the Ventura. Now we’re not saying there’s anything wrong with Helen Mirren; we love Helen Mirren in fact! Winning an Oscar for playing a Queen is a poor substitute for a real Queen though. What do you think:    ...
