Viking Star: The Most Stylish Thing From Norway Since Marilyn Monroe

The Viking Star made an early morning arrival in Greenwich on Tuesday on it’s way to Bergen where it will then be christened and officially launched as the first ship in Viking’s ocean fleet, and quite possibly the most stylish thing from Norway since Marilyn Monroe! (Well, while Marilyn herself was not Norwegian, her father was, and so was Marilyn’s birthname; Norma Jeane Mortenson.) The Star will be Vikings first foray into the ocean cruising market after spending so long dominating river cruises and expectations were high as to what she had to offer. At just 48,000 tonnes and with a passenger capacity of just 900  the ship had clearly been designed for the luxury, small ship market, able to get into ports that bigger ships just can’t, competing with the likes of Azamara, Oceania or Seabourn. But what did the ship look like inside? The interiors had been a closely guarded secret… till now! The www.CRUISE.co.uk team were exclusively invited on-board for a look around. Here’s what we found…   Our initial impression of the ship was good, in fact our overall impression of the ship was really positive. It’s a stylish, modern, luxurious ship that we’re sure people will love. Walking into the main atrium you’re confronted with a giant LCD display constantly changing for a different view each time you look… But…   We thought that it was very obvious...

Viking Cruises Do It Twelve At A Time

Coming shortly after the news that Brits love river cruising, Viking River Cruises have launched a whopping twelve new European ships – we think they may even have outdone the rumours of Carnival’s ten! The demand for European river cruises keeps growing and Viking River Cruises is set to meet the demand. The order includes ten of the familiar award-winning Viking Longships and two custom river vessels made especially for the Elbe River. The new additions bring the total number of Viking river ships to sixty (!) and comes only a year after Viking broke the Guinness World Record for the most new ships launched in a single day. The new ships have been ordered due to the overwhelming popularity of Viking’s itineraries, including their Grand European Tour, Romantic Danube and Rhine Getaway. The Elegant Elbe itinerary also proves incredibly popular, which is why Viking are doubling their capacity on the Elbe with their two brand new vessels. Viking’s official stated; “Marking another year of impressive growth, Viking River Cruises today welcomed the newest additions to its fleet of river cruise vessels at a simultaneous christening ceremony in Amsterdam and Rostock, Germany. The company christened a total of 12 new river vessels, including 10 of its award-winning Viking Longships® and two custom vessels for the Elbe River. This event officially brings Viking’s total river fleet size to 60 and...

Viking Intends to Dominate US Rivers

European river cruise giant Viking made an exciting announcement on Tuesday (February 24th), in that New Orleans will be its first North American home port for Mississippi River cruises. In recent years, river cruising has expanded in popularity, providing passengers with a more traditional cruising experience in comparison to the mass-market ships that carry thousands of passengers and feature an array of attractions, such as theatres and water parks. What’s more, river cruise boats are also able to pass through narrow waterways to port cities that giant ships could never reach. The latest move from Viking River Cruises is hoped to attract more visitors to New Orleans and contribute towards creating more job opportunities. Viking is renowned for its tours through Europe and Asia. The company has plans to build a further six boats over three years for the new American cruises, with each one boasting a 300-passenger capacity. Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of CruiseCritic.com, said: “As we’ve seen in Europe, especially, when Viking enters a market, it truly helps to broaden awareness. “The Mississippi River is one of the most magical and charming rivers to explore, so we’re looking forward to seeing more and more travellers experiencing one of America’s most intriguing cruise regions.” Viking will announce its Mississippi itineraries and ship design later this year. It is said that the Mississippi vessel will be similar to the...
