Viking Star: The Most Stylish Thing From Norway Since Marilyn Monroe

The Viking Star made an early morning arrival in Greenwich on Tuesday on it’s way to Bergen where it will then be christened and officially launched as the first ship in Viking’s ocean fleet, and quite possibly the most stylish thing from Norway since Marilyn Monroe! (Well, while Marilyn herself was not Norwegian, her father was, and so was Marilyn’s birthname; Norma Jeane Mortenson.) The Star will be Vikings first foray into the ocean cruising market after spending so long dominating river cruises and expectations were high as to what she had to offer. At just 48,000 tonnes and with a passenger capacity of just 900 the ship had clearly been designed for the luxury, small ship market, able to get into ports that bigger ships just can’t, competing with the likes of Azamara, Oceania or Seabourn. MSC Cruises Launch Virtual Cruise Experience

MSC cruises have partnered up with Samsung to bring a new virtual cruise ship experience. It will offer travellers a virtual video walkthrough of several MSC vessels. The tour will focus on six key areas of the ship, which include pool areas, staterooms and restaurants. The news follows after Azamara introduced their virtual reality tours and Carnival offered cruisers the chance to tour Carnival Vista a year before it launches. However, MSC’s virtual cruise will go one step further, by giving passengers the chance to sit in the ship’s theatre to watch a show, as well as give them scents such as freshly baked bread, chocolate, fruit or rosemary. After the announcement of further ‘all you can drink’ offers being launched on a number of popular cruise ships, it has left some of us wondering; do all inclusive packages attract the ‘wrong sort’ to cruising? Chris Sorek, chief executive of website drinkaware.co.uk expressed concerns about the reasonably cheap all inclusive drink packages. He said: “Drinkaware recommends that people stay within 3-4 units a day (equivalent to a pint and a half of lager) and women within 2-3 units a day (equivalent to a 175ml glass of wine).” “Some offers can make it difficult to keep track of what you’re drinking which may have some serious long and short term effects. Customers who sign up to these drink offers would need to consume around five or six beers – the equivalent of 10-12 units a day to make the offer worthwhile.” “Regularly drinking to excess can increase the chances of health conditions like liver damage, infertility, some cancers and depression.” With the result of Cruise holiday prices becoming ever more competitive, cruise ships increased their drink prices considerably in order to make more money.
