Is This Good Or Bad News For Venice?

What are your thoughts on the following?

It may be a wonderful and breath taking experience to sail in or out of Venice – but at what cost to both the city and the enviroment.

An Italian Court has today ruled to suspend restrictions banning large Ships traversing Venice’s lagoon, until a new hearing is held on 12th June this year.

The ruling was passed last November calling for a reduction of calls by passenger ships over 40,000 tons, starting this year, and a ban on passenger ships over 96,000 tons, effective Jan. 1, 2015.

It has been reported that, there has been insufficient time to arrange  alternative routes and plans for these ships, hence the decision made today.

Celebrity Cruises had already taken heed of the original ruling and have swapped its bigger ship Silhouette with the smaller Constellation, however few have followed their lead.

I wouldn’t like to be the one who makes the final decision – would you? Tourism brings wealth and opportunity to the City – but are the cruise ships spoiling it for everyone?
