Passengers Rescued From Fred Olsen’s Black Watch After Fire

Fred Olsen’s Black Watch has reported that all passengers are safe after a fire broke out on-board. The Black Watch arrived in Funchal at 4:30 pm Saturday 2nd of July after a fire started whilst sailing approximately 260 nautical miles from Madeira. The ship was seven days into its 13-night Portuguese Island & Cities cruise and as of the 4th July almost 700 passengers will be flown home from Funchal to London airports by private aircraft. These flights were arranged by Fred Olsen to see that their passengers arrived back safely. The fire reportedly started in the engine room whilst at sea and was successfully extinguished by the crew. There were no injuries, however three out of seven auxiliary engines that generate electrical power on the ship were damaged. Fred Olsen have stated: ‘There has been some cabling damage on board which is affecting lighting and communications but all other services are working as normal. The cabling damage has prevented the other two main engines from running and it is anticipated that repairs will cause disruption to guests. Therefore we have made the decision- in the best interests of guests’ comfort and enjoyment- to fly them home from Funchal’. The cruise line has organized three private charter flights back to London Stansted and London Gatwick to depart on Monday the 4th of July despite the challenge of securing aircraft...

Simpson Tycoon Monty Burns Based On Fred Olsen

There’s been a persistent rumour in the cruising world that the money grabbing Simpsons character ‘Monty Burns’ was based on Frederick Olsen, the founder of Fred Olsen cruises. However the creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, has finally decided to set the record straight by denying that Monty was modelled on Fred Olsen. So why did people think that Mr Burns was based on him? Well, for starters, he looks like him! Mr Olsen is a billionaire who not only created Fred Olsen but is also a world-class sailor, oil industry pioneer and the owner of Timex. In comparison, Mr Burns is a tight fisted billionaire who owns the towns nuclear power plant and famously cries “release the hounds” on those who come to him asking for money. The comparison is perhaps surprising considering the fact that Mr Olsen has actually invested some $1billion in renewable energy. An interviewer of Fred Olsen said that Mr Olsen genuinely believed the character was based on himself. This is perhaps understandable, as in the past Matt Groening has revealed that the Simpsons bullies (characters of Nelson Muntz, Jimbo Jones, Dolph Starbeam and Kearney Zzyzwicz,) are based on bullies that he encountered in his own school days. Some of the central characters names, Homer and Maggie for instance, are also based on Matt’s own family members. Mayor Quimby was based on US president...

Fred Olsen are Dedicated to the UK

Fred Olsen prove they’re dedicated to the UK by making Newcastle the new home port for flagship Balmoral during the 2016/17 period. Fred Olsen’s marketing director Nathan Philpot has said that the line understands the importance of the region and how important local ports are to customers when picking their cruise holidays. May 21st 2016 will be Balmoral’s first sailing from Newcastle heading towards the fjords for five nights. Philpot is confident that this will please a lot of UK cruisers; “We are very excited to be basing Balmoral in Newcastle from May to August in 2016, meaning that we will be able to offer our loyal guests in the northeast an even greater number of cruise departures than ever before, with a choice of 11 in total.” There are also strong whispers of a new ship to be added to Fred Olsen’s fleet, however Philpot made clear that there are “no firm plans” for expansion in the near future. Firm plans or no, Philpot still think expansion is a good idea; “We would be crazy not to be thinking about what we could do...
