Carnival’s Fathom Now Cruising To Cuba

It’s just been announced that Carnival Corporation’s latest cruise line – fathom – will be offering Cuban cruises in 2016. As we reported here fathom specialises in voluntourism, which is a concept in which people going on holiday choose to help the environment and local communities instead of simply enjoying their holiday. Interested cruisers can make reservations for the seven-night trip starting today, which will sail between Miami and Cuba. The itineraries are yet to be entirely confirmed but will have at least three port stops on the island. As has already been announced, all fathom cruises will be aboard the ex P&O Adonia. Tara Russell, fathom’s president and global impact lead, is excited to be a part of the new line; “We’re humbled and excited to be the first in the industry to offer an experience from the U.S. We see this as the beginning of what we imagine will be a beautiful relationship.” The new line will debut in April 2016, offering voluntourism cruises in Amber Cove, with more locations to be confirmed. For those that are interested the prices of these new cruises are currently starting from $2,990 per person, Carnival and fathom aren’t the only cruise lines making visits to Cuba – it was only earlier this week that MSC announced a similar plan. What do you think? Do you think voluntourism is a great way to...

Cuba – A Cruisers Perspective!

Our faithful forum member Wilba has recently been on a cruise to Cuba and has given us some absolutely fantastic blogs detailing his journey to Cuba aboard Louis Cristal and what he got up to on the beautiful island! You can find all of Wilba’s blogs below – we don’t know about you, but Cuba is definitely on our bucket list now! Wilba On Tour… Cuba Our journey began with a drive down to Gatwick South Terminal for a direct non stopper to Havana with Virgin Atlantic. I booked the ‘Aspire’ Lounge to ease the pain of hanging about at airports and this proved to be a good choice. Hot bacon rolls for breakfast and then carrot & coriander soup as the morning went on, plus help yourself to every kind of drink imaginable. No complaints there, plus the flight was on time, service was excellent and complimentary drinks throughout the flight… Wilba On Tour… Varadero, Cuba I have been to many beaches in the Caribbean but I cannot get over the clarity and stillness of the water here in Varadero. You can walk out for quite some distance before the water level even reaches waist high and all the time beneath you is flat white powder sand, no need for those frumpy looking beach shoes to protect your feet here… Wilba, Havana Great Time We have B&B only...

Cuba Is A No Go For US Cruise Ships

If you’re planning a holiday with a US cruise line and hoping to visit the Caribbean island of Cuba, you’d better think twice because American cruise ships aren’t allowed to call at Cuban ports. Following the White House’s move towards normalising relations with Cuba, speculation has been triggered among American cruise passengers who wish to travel to the exotic destination. However, they could have to wait several years before US cruise ships can to the Caribbean island. But although US-based vessels won’t be visiting Cuba for the foreseeable future, cruise ships from Europe and Canada will call to the island, with around 200 expected visits during winter 2014-15. UK cruise lines that regularly stop at Cuba include Noble Caledonia, Thomson Cruises and Fred. Olsen, while Canadian company Cuba Cruises made its first round of trips to the island last year. However, if European and Canadian cruise lines choose to visit the Caribbean, they’ll have to face up to the consequences from the US by not being allowed to call at any American ports for a period of six months. But this rule won’t affect lines that mainly attract non-US passengers and don’t call to the US, including Cuba Cruise and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. In a recent report that was released shortly after President Obama’s speech, Robin Farley – analyst of UBS Investment Research – noted that cruise lines...
