You are free to remove the $10 per day automatic tip but be aware anything you tip your steward or waiters/bar staff etc they will have to hand into the "pool", only if you keep the automatic tip on do they keep whatever you give them.

There is a discretionary tip added on to your account each day. I believe the amount is in the brochure. You can increase or reduce this if you like. Personally I always leave some money for my cabin steward at the end of the cruis.

Princess will take a discretionary charge of $10 per passenger per day, and this will automatically be added to your onbaord account to pay at the end of the cruise. If you are not happy to tip this way, you need wo wait until you are onboard, then speak to reception about this.

The 'discretionary charge' is a con perpetrated by the Cruise line. They make it look like the done thing, if not mandatory. When you get on board tell them to cancel this automatic addition to your bill. You're then free to a) tip whoever you think deserves it, and b) Decide how much you want to tip, in each case. Please note that 15% is already added to drinks' charges. Allegedly, this goes to the waiters who serve you. Maybe if the Cruise Lines paid their staff higher wages, the subject would not come up. Have a great cruise!!!

I have previously worked for Princess and have cruised as a passenger on the Sea. Princess add tips to the bill automatically on a daily basis. This is in response to passengers in previous years being stressed, in the way that you are, at what to pay. This takes away the worry of offending people and will ease your mind when you want to be relaxing. The tips are shared around the various front of house staff but also staff that work hard behind the scenes who rarely get acknowledged by passengers. I can also confirm that most drink stewards do not get a basic wage, and ONLY get paid for the drinks that they serve, with the added tip going solely to that individual.

Two nights on Indy..

By Alison Ranaldi

Alison Ranaldi's blog

Last week I spent two nights on the newly revamped Independence of the Seas.We sailed from Southampton in glorious sunshine to Le Havre and back. This was my third time on board this ever-popular ship and I was keen to see the changes to her after a big refit. We had a balcony cabin on deck 9 which had everything we needed for a comfortable break. I’m not generally a fan of mini-cruises. They offer an excellent way for someone like myself to see the ships but I do not think they are a g...
