I agree with "Freeborn" it may have been a very wise action because the pound has declined aginst the dollar so much. I would also wait until you see the service that you will undoubtedly get from Celebrity staff before you consider taking the charge off if indeed that is possible. .... Neil.

Wouldn't think so - it would be very unfair on those who are teetotal!!

No, it doesn't include the 15% gratuity, which is added to all drinks (including non-alcoholic, like Cova speciality coffees) on board Celebrity's ships. Paying your gratuities upfront isn't necessarily 'foolish', since it removed from you the necessity to ensure you've got sufficient dollars left at the end of the cruise. For British cruisers, the further in advance you've already paid the better, since the pound has slumped against the dollar so badly in recent weeks!

No the 15% is added to drinks & other services you purchase on board. If your tour company is that Un knowledgeable I would be very wary of their ability. Sorry! .....Wilba.

Just Finished a cruise on the Mercury through the Panama Canal. They still add the 15% on drinks and anything else on top of the upfront gratuities.

I have just returned from a celebrity cruise and I paid the gratuties in advance which was great as it meant I had no queue to pat on board. These gratuties only go to cabin and waiter staff. The 15% on drinks goes to the wages of the bar staff and they were fantastic and the bar prices very reasonable that we were very happy to pay that. I thought the staff were amazing and was more than happy to reward them. So often staff are cool or disinterested so I enjoy being treated well and dont mind the small payment. Claire.

Two nights on Indy..

By Alison Ranaldi

Alison Ranaldi's blog

Last week I spent two nights on the newly revamped Independence of the Seas.We sailed from Southampton in glorious sunshine to Le Havre and back. This was my third time on board this ever-popular ship and I was keen to see the changes to her after a big refit. We had a balcony cabin on deck 9 which had everything we needed for a comfortable break. I’m not generally a fan of mini-cruises. They offer an excellent way for someone like myself to see the ships but I do not think they are a g...
