Cagliari - we got off the ship and went into the town on the shuttle bus - we got on a bus tour of the city which cost about 6 euros each - lasted about an hour and very good value for money - didn't bother with the ship's excursions - depends which day you are there but there are shops just behind the main road facing the harbour. Had a wonderful time on Navigator last September - enjoy!

From my experience ,i would go ashore and get a taxi driver wo can speak good english,if you can get a party of four then it is very cost effective.this way you can go where you want and stay as long as you want at any given location.Pleas leave good time to be back on board or you will be walking a long way.

Navigator is our favourite cruise ship of any company. At Marseilles you can sometimes go to Port Grimaud, near St Tropez. It is beautiful, like a mini Venice, would be worth a trip. Have a great time, you will on this ship.

Get a shuttle return-ticket on board ($5x2) for a bus which takes you to Marseilles marina. Walk forward a further 100 metres past the bus-stop. There is a booking/ticket office for the two "road-trains". Take the one which takes you to the Monastery which can be seen atop the hill looking over the boats. Here you get a fantastic view of the whole town and the ship. Probably by the gate will be a guy with a french horn playing "Ave Maria". At either Cagliari or Palermo (I've forgotten which) go to the docking side of the ship. There will be two gangways available - one off a higher deck than usual. Use this one to disembark. It takes you through an information centre all about tour buses - taxi availability and where to go. Most ship's shore excursions are expensive when you can do it yourself for virtually half the cost.

Try the hop on & of buses in Marseilles, Cagliari and Palermo. very good value - approx £15-£18 per person. Check the local tourist web sites before you leave home, they are a wealth of informatio.

I have been on two Royal Caribbean Med. cruises, visiting Marseilles & Palermo. We took an excursion to Nice & Cannes - Nice is charming, with huge market & great restaurants. Cannes is a 'let down', just grand hotels. Monte Carlo is stunning, to see Palace, Casino, and church where Rainiers are buried. Palermo is very overrated, built-up, noisy & HIGHLY ADVISE to explore ON YOUR OWN. A trip to Provence region has been recommended.

In Palermo we walked a few blocks into town and rode the double decker red tour bus. It had head sets in different languages and was quite interesting. There was a bus every 20 minutes or so. We got off and toured several stops the got back on a later bus. Most were very close to scheduled times. It made for an excellent reasonably priced day. Jim from Alabam.

At Marseilles, trot up to the railway station, get a train to somewhere more scenic (Aix etc); do check the times coming back! Palermo is quite interesting to stroll round yourself, check guidebook / web for attractions, map etc.
