North & South Divide

By the time this blog is published we will as a country, have decided on who we think will best bring in stability, jobs and money into the country.  We always have a joke (or is it) about the north/south divide. Being a north eastern girl, I am of course passionate about this part of the country, as I am sure you all are.

It is therefore great news to hear that Plymouth are to get a 10 million pound cruise ship terminal. This is wonderful for all of you in the south west and I sincerely hope it comes off.  The terminal is due to be built in Millbay, after long discussions with the local council.  I am keeping my fingers crossed they do keep their word!

So what has the south got that the north hasn’t?!  The North does have such great ports as Liverpool, Hull, Rosyth, Edinburgh, and of course the piece de resistance – Newcastle! Joking apart, I do wonder why ships do not sail from the north more. Yes, we do have departures from these cities, Fred Olsen, Cruise & Maritime and Hurtigruten are great supporters of the north, why no more?

The majority of people live in the south? Our docks are not big enough? We don’t have deep water ports? Sailing time and fuel costs may dictate why the ships sail from the South? These of course could be huge factors. In this day and age it would be nice to think that, us “northerners”  don’t always have to travel all that way to Southampton, Dover, Tilbury and soon to be Plymouth to start their holidays in sunnier climes.

What do you think?
