Amsterdam and the tourist tax

So it seems that Amsterdam is cashing in on all of the cruise ship calls there.
From now it looks like they are going to be charging 8 euros for everyone coming into the city on a ship and staying overnight, it is based per 24 hours for all passengers over 3 years old.
River cruises it seems will be exempt for this as they have a turnaround in Amsterdam
It is a controversial move from the city council of Amsterdam and has already caused a few cruise ships to rethink their itineraries
Cruise and Maritime have said they are going to look at replacing most of their Amsterdam schedules.

CLIA which is cruise lines international association is the worlds largest cruise industry trade association said that they were disappointed in Amsterdam doing this and they put out a statement saying this

A statement read: “CLIA and its members are disappointed that the City of Amsterdam has introduced its day tourist tax which applies to all transit passengers (older than 3 years) and is charged per 24-hour period.

“This means that cruise passengers visiting Amsterdam, who already pay a significant amount in port fees and other tariffs, will have to pay a further €8 per 24-hour period that they remain in the city, whilst other day tourists, who arrive in Amsterdam by train, bus or car, would not have to pay a day tourist tax and do not also pay port or other fees.

Cruise and Maritime are planning to call to Rotterdam instead as it is just Amsterdam at the moment that will have the tax, this means around 30 of their cruises will have to change itineraries which will no doubt upset quite a few people expecting an overnight in Amsterdam

Cruise ships pay a lot in port taxes which is why some mini cruises are not as cheap as we expect but will they really change to Rotterdam or other ports.
Lots of cruise lines according to cruise critic are monitoring the situation.

What do you think? would you pay the tourist tax of 8 euros, I think I would as it’s an amazing city but when it comes to a family of four then it can run quite expensive. Plus if it’s for 24-hour stays does that mean a day call is exempt and also if the ship left in 23 hours would they not have to pay it at all?
I am sure all will become clear once it is implemented as it goes live from 1st January
Watch this space as they say
