Rotterdam or anywhere

Rotterdam or anywhere, Liverpool or Rome, in the words of the song.
Well today it’s Rotterdam

The reason for my blog is this, 2 weeks ago I put a blog on about the tourist tax for ships that go to Amsterdam for 24 hours or longer and how the cruise lines are changing the itineraries so nobody has to pay it, my cruise was overnight in Amsterdam and 2 day’s after me putting my blog on our cruise got changed, no Amsterdam at all and it now goes to Rotterdam instead.
I thought why not have a look at Rotterdam a little closer, nobody seems to know a great deal about the place really, from listening to the people I have asked I thought I would find out just a few things.

So first and foremost Rotterdam has a large port and has lot’s of maritime ties, it is a large city, actually the second largest in Holland, there are lots of vintage boats to see and a lot of things happen near to or on the water. It was granted rights as a city way back in 1370 and it is nicknamed gateway to Europe.

There are so many different types of architecture around the city and the market is certainly different, especially when it is lit up. It has everything from fish to flowers to clothes. I would imagine it would be worth a look around, it looks interesting.

Fancy a good view, go to visit the Euromast which takes you 185 meters into the sky where you can have a bird’s eye view of the city if you are brave enough of course. You can take the tram from central station or go by water taxi, there is a place where you can have lunch as well with a really good child-friendly restaurant.

Fancy a beer?

Then head to Delfshaven. The brewery is in a lovely building that used to be the town hall and as well as being able to have a beer, all brewed by hand, they have won quite a few prizes for their beers. you can also eat there and if the mood takes you then you can get married there as well, of course, it would need to be planned, you can’t just turn up but you could do all the rest.

Bridges I love, there are so many different types, the one in Rotterdam is lovely lit up in the evenings. Erasmusbrug it is called, it is made from light blue steel and where the pylon meets at the top there is a swan shape which is why it is nicknamed the swan.

One of the most interesting and certainly iconic things in Rotterdam is the cube houses, they are exactly that cube houses, the tilt at a 45-degree angle as well which looks a little odd, I know they have a show cube there that you can go in and experience what it would be like living in one. it is certainly something different.

Well that is just a few things to do in Rotterdam if your itinerary is changed or indeed if you go for a mini break, if you have been there and want to comment on other things you can do then please feel free
