Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has wasted no time in adding to the Oceania Cruises brand it recently acquired as part of its purchase of Prestige Cruises. The firm has announced it has entered into a definitive agreement with Princes Cruises to buy Ocean Princess, a 684-passenger ship that will join the Oceania stable. NCL will not take delivery of the vessel until March 2016, at which point it will undergo a $40 million (£25.4 million) refurbishment in Marseille before becoming the fourth ship sailing under the Oceania Cruises brand, joining Regatta, Nautica and Insignia. Cruises cancelling to avoid stopping in Israel

As the violence continues to escalate in Israel, cruise lines are changing their itineraries or cancelling journeys to avoid stopping in the unsafe country.  So far, Regent Seven Seas have cancelled the port call Seven Seas Mariner was scheduled for on July 19th and has done the same for the stop Oceania was supposed to make on September 8th. Instead of Israel, the ships will now stop at Mykonos, Greece. A spokesperson said: “We continue to monitor the situation in Israel and will adjust future itineraries, should the need warrant.” After shrapnel from rockets flying overhead landed on deck on July 7th, German cruise line AIDA Cruises cancelled all of its 2014 port calls in Israel.  Other firms have yet to adjust their itineraries to avoid the country, but many have revealed they are monitoring the situation closely to take action if needed.  The tourist season for Israel does not begin until later this year, so many cruises may be unaffected by the conflict currently happening in the country as the situation could settle.  Do you have a cruise booked that stops in...

Ships in the making

There are plenty of new builds on the horizon and UK cruise enthusiasts in particular have plenty to look forward to in 2015. The cruise industry continues to go from strength to strength and is also currently in the process of conquering new markets, most notably in Asia. With cruise line spreading their fleets across a larger area than ever before, the time is ripe for new ships. So it’s not surprising to see that there are some great-looking vessels currently under construction or planned for the next few years. Because of the scale of these hulking behemoths, preparations for a new ship will start years before they are first enjoyed by passengers, so as a result we have a good idea of what things will look like in the coming years. Below are a selection of some of the most note-worthy vessels being introduced later this year and beyond: Costa Diadema – Set to stand as Italy’s largest ever vessel, the new Costa ship is based on similar schematics to the Carnival Dream. It is being developed by Carnival’s virtuoso architect Joe Farcus, who has gone on record saying that he believes this is his best ever ship. Costa Diadema will take to the seas at the end of October this year. Quantum of the Seas – Another vessel set to make its debut in 2014, this ship...

Stockholm a popular choice for luxury travel turnarounds

Stockholm is positioning itself as a turnaround destination of choice for luxury cruise brands such as Regent Seven Seas, Silversea Cruises, Windstar Cruises Crystal Cruises and Oceania. That is according to Seatrade Insider, which reports that 274 cruise ships are expected to visit the city this year, carrying 470,000 passengers in total. Some 36 of these will use the ship as a turnaround port, the majority of which are from luxury cruise brands. Stockholm Visitors Board recently pointed out that the majority of passengers on ships calling at Stockholm will go ashore – 97 per cent compared just 87 per cent across the rest of Europe. Claudia Quas, project manager of Stockholm Cruise Network, told the website: “Thanks to its compact size, the city is the perfect cruise destination for day trippers as well as turnarounds.” In 2014, Stockholm is also expecting more UK passengers than it has ever received before, as Brits continue to be attracted to the allure of Scandinavian territories. Been to Stockholm? Interested in visiting? Let us...
