Cruise lines abandon Faroe Islands following horrific mass whale slaughter

I read this article a couple weeks ago regarding the mass slaughter of Whales on the Faroe islands and was shocked and horrified such a tradition still existed in this day and age. It turned my stomach as I scrolled down my ipad to sea photos of the sea turning a crimson shade of red, where fishing trawlers had forced wales into the shallow cove resulting on them becoming trapped and then pounced on by locals with their machetes’ hacking away at their desperate bodies splashing in the water!! Although whaling is illegal in Denmark, it is allowed in the Faroe Islands.

I was so happy to read this week that two cruise lines have announced to abandon their cruise stops to the Faroe Island in protest of this barbaric annual tradition. AIDA has already announced its cruises will now stop in Kirkwall in Orkney instead.

Both AIDA and Hapag-Lloyd were contacted by Netherlands-based charity Sea Shepherd to immediately postpone cruises to the Faroe Islands in the face of the on-going slaughters. Hapag-Lloyd announced that they had already reduced their stops and are only making one stop to the island next year.

Five Sea Shepherd environmental activists were convicted of trying to put a stop to the slaughter by protesting on the beach, if I lived there I would have been happy to join them.  The Faroe islands has always been on my bucket list to visit, I’m happy to say I would in no way wish to set foot there in my lifetime and think many other people will feel the same. I would not wish to give the Faroe islands a single penny of my hard earned cash.

It’s great to see the cruise lines getting behind this and I hope many more lines will join the crusade. Let’s hit the Faroe islands where it hurts just like they did to 61 pilot whales earlier this month.
