Healthy Eating On A Cruise?

One enduring myth about cruising is you will do nothing but eat.

It is true that cruise travellers love to eat and can easily consume over 6000 calories a day! Most cruise lines do ensure you will never go hungry, but they also make sure they are choices to satisfy nearly every kind of eater – including those who want to make healthy choices.  So, while you should  feel free to indulge in a treat or two, eating a healthy diet on a cruise is not as hard as you may think!

Peruse your choices.  Many meals aboard cruise ships are buffet style. Don’t be shy about walking around and seeing all the choices before you make a decision on what to eat. Try to avoid impulsive choices like burgers and chips – difficult I know!

Ask questions.  The servers, chef and attendants are there to ensure you have the best holiday. Ask them about the ingredients, or can you get a dish made in a healthier way?

Choose your dining venue wisely. If the all you can eat buffet makes you eat far too much then simply avoid and stick to the main dining room.  If you do not want to sample every course then you don’t have to. Sometimes we just “have” to have that extra pudding – I do!

Ask for half portions – simple!

Most cruise lines denote dishes that are healthier with fewer calories.  These include Queen Mary Canyon ranch spa, Royal Caribbean Vitality selections and Carnival’s spa cuisine. Numerous cruise lines have rid their menus of the unhealthy fat that is linked with higher levels of bad cholesterol. Lines that have taken this step include, Crystal, Seabourn, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, Disney, Holland America, Windstar and Celebrity.

The temptations are of course too much, I “have” to have that extra cake at coffee time!  If you are like me, I am sure many of you are, then don’t forget you can get yourself off to the fitness centre to sweat off those extra calories.. OR you could just say tomorrow is another day!
