My Day in Athens

On our Cruise, in June one of the ports of call was Athens I’ve had so much to write about haven’t had time to tell you about it yet. So before  I left I booked us on to the Hop on Hop off bus. There are really good value for money and whether you stay on for the whole journey or does as it says and hop on and off as you wish you will agree its worth it.

We arrived early in the morning had breakfast and prepared our selves for a long hot day of sightseeing. It was our second visit to Athens however we had never visited the Acropolis. The buses were waiting outside the port and as we had pre-booked it wanst a case of checking which had the best deal we headed straight to our coach. There are a total of 4 lines on the one we took, however, we only went on the two. We used the line from Piraeus port into the city and the Mainline around Athens.

The Piraeus line takes you quickly into the city and drops you off at the foot of the Acropolis here you can change to the main line that will take your around Athens or spend some time visiting the Acropolis which is what we decided to do. There is a little climb up to the top and the stones can be rather slippy there are a few shady places to stop on the way up. We hadn’t reserved tickets, however, the queue wasn’t too bad and we were soon entering the site. It is very busy once inside and no shady spots so it can get really hot. The site of the Acropolis and the Parthenon are stunning however there is still as you can imagine lots of pieces all numbered to be put in place like a massive jigsaw puzzle if you can call it that.  There are views down to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and stunning views of the city.  over to Lycabettus Hill.

We left the site and headed back on the bus we visited Parliment where the guards still don the national dress and the funny pom-pom shoes.  Then we headed to Palka for some lunch which is a nice pedestrianised street overspilling with shops and restaurants. Trying the local beer and Gyros. Afterwards, we then headed back on the bus which took us past the Temple of Zeus and the Ancient Olympic stadium. then headed back to the ship for a dip in the pool…

Whether you decide to do a lot or a little its entirely up to you. There is still lots left for us to do on our next trip which I’m sure we will do in the near future.

till next time thanks for reading

Lauren xx
