Around the world in a surreal evening of intrigue and delight…

On Thursday of last week, I was fortunate to be privy to an event that promised to be a glittering party at the stately home of Phileas Fogg. as he shared the sights, sound and tastes of his epic voyage with a circle of lucky VIP guests.

It truly was an evening full of intrigue and delight…

We were transported first of all to a vintage steam railway station,  where we enjoyed celebratory fizz and were given a commemorative newspaper; recounting Fogg’s journey around the world and giving hints at what may lay in store for the evening.

We were then transported to a secret location, which turned out to be the stately home of Phileas Fogg and his lovely wife Aoda; where we were welcomed on arrival by a tremendous brass band and where Phileas Fogg delighted us with tales of his epic voyage.

Once inside, we were able to explore the home and experience the delights of Phileas Fogg’s incredible journey around the world.

We began our adventure in the planning room which was laden with maps, photographs and various treasures from his travels… from there we headed downstairs and explored rooms dedicated to San Francisco, Bombay, Hong Kong, New York and Egypt, before heading back upstairs to sample the tastes of the Orient and relax in a quintessential London lounge-style bar.

Only on an adventure of this proportion set across a single evening,  could I experience delights as varied and surreal as…

Experiencing Gin O’clock in Bombay, shortly before sipping cocktails in New York and playing roulette in San Francisco.

…and sampling the tastes of the Orient with the most sumptuous of street-fayre, finished off with a candyfest that made me feel like a little girl in paradise!

& this was just for starters!

We were then called to the dining room; an extravaganza which involved being escorted, by the delightful brass band playing with gusto, as we walked en masse through enclosures housing magnificent beasts, elephants, dinosaurs and penguins, to a glittering dining room where we feasted upon scrumptious food & wine, and danced the night away celebrating the joy of travel in all its glory!
