Free drinks packages good or bad, you may well ask…..

Tis the season to be jolly and nothing works better than a free drinks package (ha ha)

As we have just finished the festive season and all the new fantastic offers are out there, I thought I would take a look at exactly what you are getting for your money. Even when free you will see with some cruise lines there is a cost!

So a customer called me today to ask about the Royal new all inclusive package. It seems that if you don’t pay your gratuities up front there is a charge for every drink of 10% tax . (not so free then!) med cruises the tax is included on the new all inclusive, and I have the email to prove it from Royal Caribbean themselves. The same apply s to Celebrity with their drinks package and  NCL charge 15% Gratuity extra on Caribbean and Med cruises. If you pay your gratuities up front no charge but without gratuities 10%- 15% tax. Remember these are free drinks packages. So you go away thinking I have payed everything just got to tip my cabin boy and maybe a couple of good waiters and bam you have an extra bill. the conclusion is to pay the gratuities  upfront as if you like a tiple and fully intend to use as much all inclusive as possible (I included tea, coffee etc in that !), it can work out the same if not more for the extra taxes.

I check on some of the others , MSC no charge, Thomson no charge, Fred Olsen no extra charge.

Also do look into whats in those drinks packages. I think I was spoilt on MSC as there is something for everyone , cocktails aplenty too on their drinks package (allegrissimo). No hidden charges and you do not have to pay gratuities up front.

I know Fred Olsen have the drinks package but water by the bottle and Cocktails not included.

Thomson have a list but no premium drinks included.

As for the others it is rare to find a drinks package per-say on P and O or princess , but their drinks are reasonable price and if you like the speciality coffees or soft drinks there are packages for that.
