Remembrance Sunday Cruise Options

As Armistice day approaches I have long thought of a commemorative cruise that would take in many of Northern Europe’s battlefields and memorial sites. I did not realise just how popular these types of sailings would be and just where the best shore excursions are to celebrate the history and lives of Our War heroes.

I have always been fascinated with history and I personally love the thought of spending a chilly November Autumnal morning visiting the fallen and paying my respects.

What can you expect from a Remembrance Day cruise and where are the best destinations to take in?

I have put together a guide to my bucket list war memorial destinations below. I would love to know if any of you have been to these destinations and paid your respects.

If you are interested in planning ahead for next year’s Memorial Day cruises just get in touch and we can talk through some of the finest options together.

I personally feel a River Cruise is the best way of taking in historic Northern Europe. There are some very reasonable offerings with Viking River cruises who offer free shore excursions and a very scenic route through iconic cities whose landscape was completely shaped changed by two world wars.
There are some wonderful cruise options with Fred Olsen, Cruise & Maritime, Saga, and a host of River Cruises that set sail in Historic Bristol Harbour. Sailing through the night there are options to wake up in Honfleur where there is the chance to visit Pegasus Bridge. Then on to Guernsey’s St Peters Port with an optional tour of The Islands fortifications with an underground Military hospital and The famous Occupation Museum. Then there is Charbourg with excursions to The Allied Landing areas and The D Day Museum at Arromanches. Memorial services are usually held on board.
Saga’s Newest recruit to their River Cruise fleet The AmaLegro will be sailing on The beautiful Seine from Paris on her Normandy and D Day Landings Cruise there will be included excursions to Honfleur and the Gold and Juno Beaches where British Troops landed. The seven night option also takes in Monet’s Gardens in Giverny, The Canadian Cemetery at Beny-Sur-Mer The Medieval City of Rouen and the ruins of Jumieges Abbey.
Portsmouth is home to one of Europe’s most important Maritime Cities and we have plenty of sailings from this historic port. With voyages taking in World war sites in Northern France. Visit Dunkirk and The Beaches. With a very moving visit to Ypres and Flanders Fields Museum. There will be a special service of remembrance whilst cruising off The Normandy Beaches. If like me, you fascinated by European History and would relish the opportunity to pay your respects to the fallen then feel free to reach out to me to discuss your remembrance week cruise options for 2017.

All that remains to say is Lest We forget those who given so very much for the freedom we appreciate today.
