Take a Magic Carpet ride

Celebrity’s new ship the Edge debuted early last month with another cruise line first……A Magic Carpet!

Yes it does look like a large orange lift on the side of the ship, but in reality, it’s a spectacular 90 ton movable deck that glides effortlessly up and down the ship, boasting an array of different uses at each level.

On Deck 2 it’s used as a water level walkway to board or disembark tender boats without the need for ramps or stairs. On Deck 5 it serves as an Al-fresco extension to one of the ships bars. Deck 14 it acts as a sophisticated bar and at it’s highest point on Deck 16, it allows passengers to take in the stunning views out to sea whilst dining.

Just another example of how each cruise company is trying to come up with ‘firsts’ to woo new and existing customers to come aboard and sample the delights of their new ships.

So what other firsts have there been throughout the years?

The first Mega Ship was launched in 1980 by NCL the Norway. Then in 1999 Royal Caribbean launched the first ice-rink at sea aboard the Voyager of the Seas.

Fast forward to 2016, Royal Caribbean launched the Harmony of the Seas with Ultimate Abyss and the longest slide at sea. An exciting thrill ride that my wife and I experienced on our honeymoon.

Most recently, Carnival Cruises have announced the first roller coaster at sea aboard their new Mardi Gras ship which is due to set sail in 2020.

So much goes into the design of these ships bringing brand new concepts (from moving decks to robot controlled bars to name a few) to stay ahead of the competition. But what would  you like to see? Would the futuristic cruise featured in Disney’s WALL-E be too much or could it become a reality in the future? One thing is for certain, expect the unexpected!
