My Top 5 Best Christmas TV AD’s

You either love them or hate them but unfortunately , some may say  they rear their ugly head around the middle of October . Millions of pounds are spent from companies to their advertising agents on who can come up with the most powerful Christmas TV ad of the year. So what makes the perfect Christmas ad, companies have one chance to make an impact to make the consumer flock through their doors at Christmas and to hand over their hard earned cash. I have noticed this year that many ad’s have included children which symbolizes what Christmas is all about. I have also noticed that many adverts this year have a story behind them proving a poignant point , also where the music was was jolly playing Christmas Carols for many years, this has also changed with a more romantic and subtle sound giving the story behind the advert more prominence.

So whether you watch the adverts or you fast forward them here are my best .

Before I start with my best Christmas ad’s I wanted to share my worst and I have to say  being a leading supermarket giant , Asda , what are you doing? You definitely need to bring in a new advertising team as this year’s campaign ‘The story of Christmas smiles’ made me want to be sad rather than smile. It didn’t excite me whatsoever. Come on Asda surely you  can do better than that with all your profits. Here it is for you to see and judge for yourself.

So going back to my top 5 Christmas Ad’s , here goes do you agree or would you change things around.

5. MARKS AND SPENCER -FOLLOW THE FAIRIES, – A different to their more traditional advert which normally consists of celebrities giving gifts at Christmas, Follow the Fairies is about re uniting loved ones with some fairy dust, does it work? for me it does, I guess because it’s different and magical!

4. BURBERRY – FROM LONDON WITH LOVE – FEATURING ROMEO BECKHAM – One word wow, not only for the advert but the fact that Romeo Beckham was paid a staggering £45000 for filming this ad which took only a day to film, making him one of the highest paid made models of today. Is this a one off for Romeo or is his future set on the modelling circuit. I have to say for me this advert oozes Christmas magic with the dancing and the music ‘The way that we live’ which was specially written for this advert and will be out on i tunes shortly, really brought the gift offering advert to life.

3. ANT AND DEC – MORRISONS – I have to say the best thing Morrisons could have ever done was to sign the incredible duo Ant and Dec to support their Christmas advert, it worked for me and I have to say it gives you everything you would expect from a supermarket at Christmas and so so much more, Anything starring Ant and dec is sure to be a winner in my eyes and of course many others as everything they touch turns to gold and why not they are great at what they do. Well done Morrisson’s a real scoop over the last two years!

2. COCA – COLA – THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING – Yes this traditional and highly anticipated advertisement was finally released in last night’s X Factor . I have to say millions of us wait for this signature advert to let us know the countdown to Christmas finally started. For me as soon as I saw it I let out a cheer to see it at last. This has been my number one advert for many years until this year which you will see shortly. The anticipation for the coca cola truck has brought huge momentum throughout the country with many post on social media sites last night as soon as they had spotted it. Coca Cola very cleverly have coined in on this successful ad by sending the coca cola truck to various towns and cities throughout the country leading up to Christmas where they offer you photo opportunities and and can of coke (at a charge of course) but lets face it Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without this advert.

1. JOHN LEWIS – MONTY THE PENGUIN – A sure fire hands down winner, tissues at the ready for when you watch this heart warming mini movie about a Penguin looking for love with the help of a little boy at Christmas. Without spoiling the plot 😉 you won’t be disappointed with the happy ending , or maybe you will be when it becomes apparent that Monty the Penguin is in fact a stuffed toy . Boo Hoo but irrelevant of that , Monty steals the show and with 4.5 million views on you tube the 8 year old  boy Rhys Edwards who plays Monty’s friend is also a sure fire hit. It cost John Lewis £1million to shoot this 60 second video and I have to say Congratulations Mr Lewis its worth every penny and definitely a worthy winner,

Finally I couldn’t finish off my most best Christmas TV adverts without paying tribute to the lovely Linda Bellingham, OXO Christmas advert was released in 1984 and gave the tale of a daughter talking about her Christmas day paying homage to the fact all her mum did was make the gravy. Those were the days and how times have changed. A campaign has been launched to show the OXO adverts throughout Christmas day a campaign I hope comes off for a very special lady.

So wha t are your favourite adverts and do you watch them? As the countdown to Christmas is now officially on lets see who wins the war in Christmas profits based on their adverts, but my question would be if Cruise Companies follow suit at their turn of year campaigns would they work. Could you imagine Royal Caribbean making a story of a little boy and a penguin at sea, it could work, or Ant and Dec featuring on new ship Britannia offering Eric Lanlards Cream scones with a cup of  Earl Grey. I can picture it now!!

Cheers Holly xxx
