My Mexican Adventure

I’m back from my trip to the Pacific coast of Mexico and what a wonderful holiday it was.

I have to say the the worst part of the trip was the outward journey. It was a long flight – over 11 hours and when we arrived at Puerto Vallarta airport the luggage took quite a while to come out and we were in the immigration queue for almost 2 hours. it was a killer! Luckily that was the only real negative part of our trip.

The hotel was fine and the food was good. I love Mexican food anyway and I got rather addicted to the salsa and guacamole which I sometimes had for breakfast, lunch & dinner! The food highlight was when we were out & about and we went to a traditional restaurant and the guacamole was prepared with fresh ingredients right at our table. As predicted I also had ‘one or two’ margaritas. Many places seemed to serve them in glasses the size of a bucket!

We visited a ‘hippy’ beach town called Sayulita where most people seemed to be walking around barefoot, however the beach it was famed for wasn’t great – very busy and full of beach touts. Luckily we had met someone at our hotel who advised us to visit a nearby beach town called San Pancho. This was excellent advice as the place was beautiful. A really unspoilt little place with a natural beach where we even had a turtle that came out of the sea and had a walk along the beach – amazing.

We also had a day out to Puerto Vallarta itself, around half an hour away from where we stayed. Again, all though it was the biggest town in the area and it was pretty bustling it had a relaxed atmosphere and still had a Mexican feel to it. The beach was lovely and there was a wide ‘malecon’ (promenade) that we had a lovely long walk on. We had a great meal in a Cantina where we were even serenaded by a mariachi band.

We saw lots of wildlife right outside our hotel including coati (a bit like a racoon), pelicans, manta rays & we watched dolphins frolicking in the sea from the comfort of our sun loungers. The best bit was seeing a baby turtle that had just popped out of his egg and headed off in to the ocean to set off on his life journey. It was very moving. We also saw some of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen. I didn’t think Sri Lanka could be rivalled, nut these were certainly up there.

Overall I loved this side of Mexico. It felt very Mexican compared to the more commercialised Caribbean side. It was really relaxed and the weather was excellent. We had rain one day, but the rest of the time it was glorious & touching 30 degrees. I would definitely go back again.

And now…back to reality!
