Farewell Adonia!!

This weeks “big cruise story” was the news that Carnival (P&O’s owners) are to take the Adonia from the P&O fleet and start a very niche company called Fathom.

Now apparently there has been a growth in demand for holidays where you go and work in the places you visit communities and have a positive impact on peoples’ lives. Quite how they got this information is a tad beyond me, but this is what the 710 passenger ship has to look forward too.

She will be sailing out of Miami and taking “voluntourists” (great word) to the Caribbean where guest travelling with the new Fathom venture, will be given the chance to work on activities such as providing clean water, planting crops, and teaching English to the islanders. There will also be a change to the on board experience, where west end style shows are to be replaced with briefings and the next days work, Spanish lessons and community building exercises.

The target market will be 20 – 60 year olds and families that really want to “give back” to the places we visit so often and down really think about.

All prices will be in US dollars and you won’t be able to book in the UK, so I doubt there will be many Brits on board.

Would you like to give this sort of holiday a go?

Will you miss the Adonia?
