My friend Kjersti from Longyerbyen, Svalbard, Norway was in London working so I travelled to London on Wednesday last week to join her for the night, we went to the Lyric Theatre to watch the Michael Jackson show – ‘Thriller Live’ – it was amazing, it could have been him as the lead dancer & singer was amazing amongst the rest of the cast.  I have seen the show before in Birmingham but this was so much better as it was more of a tribute to MJ himself. Myself & Kjersti are huge MJ fans so it was amazing to watch the show with someone who loves his music as much as myself.

We travelled back to Coventry on Thursday so Kjersti could stay at my house and add another UK city to her ‘places visited’.  I took her to see the old ruins of the Cathedral which was destroyed in the war, we climbed 180 steps to the very top – an amazing view but then had to come down 180 steps – hard work on the legs trust me, they were like jelly after but it was worth it.  As I’ve lived here for 10 years but never done the tour so was good to see it myself.

We went back to London on Saturday to see Eddie Izzard in concert at the O2 but couldn’t stay over as Kjersti’s flight was from Birmingham on Sunday morning.  A visit to Madam Tussaud’s was on the cards as I have never been before so we did that in the afternoon, I loved it especially Michael Jackson & Robbie Williams!!

We were stranded in London as we missed our coach back due to the show running over as he was filming his DVD so kept doing re-runs.  My Adam had to come and pick us up as no more coaches available at that time of night.  It was frustrating at the time but funny now we look back at it.

Kjersti & I met at a cruise convention last year, we sat together at dinner and got on amazingly well so are now good friends, we meet up every time she comes to London for work purposes and talk via email or Face book regularly.

I have just booked flights to go and visit her in Svalbard next February as it looks amazing where she lives, I’m really excited as there is so much to do there and she has lots planned for us from dog sledging, snowmobiling, cave walking & polar bear hunting (very rare to see one apparently)… but I’ve said I’m not coming home till I’ve seen one.

Svalbard is located 400 miles from Norwegian mainland and only 600 miles from ‘The North Pole’ – the largest resort and administrative centre is ‘Longyerbyen’ where Kjersti lives. It is a spectacular frozen world of ice floes & glaciers, wide fjords & snow covered peaks with beautiful breathtaking scenery – I’ll tell you first hand next year!
Lots of wildlife to see including countless sea birds, beluga & minke whales, seals, walrus, Svalbard reindeer, arctic fox & maybe a polar bear hunting on pack ice.

Sunlight is 24 hours a day with ‘Midnight Sun’ in summer months.
Longyerbyen has a population on 1100 people and probably just as many snow mobiles and is famous for it’s museum & gallery.

More than 30 cruises call at Longyerbyen as one of their ports of call, the cruises operate between June to October and range from how far they travel.  From 7 nights to 35 nights so you can choose how much of this beautiful country you wish to see.

Cruise lines that visit Svalbard:- Costa, MSC, Holland America, Silversea, Fred Olsen, Hurtigruten, Oceania & many more smaller local cruise lines.

I didn’t realise that the larger ships visited but as Kjersti has advised me now I know, so if you fancy a cruise to visit this fantastic country give me a call on 0800 408 6108 or email me on [email protected]

I look forward to planning your trip for you.
