Cruise sales slow – MSC brings another megaship to the UK

Recently the industry body CLIA pushed back the date it believes UK passengers will top 2 million passengers for the first time. Currently the UK cruise industry sees more than 1.7 passengers on cruises with UK cruisers visiting everywhere from the gorgeous Norwegian Fjords to the amazing Orient. Now CLIA believes the cruise industry will continue to grow, albeit at a slower rate, predicting 2 million passengers per year by 2020. The growth prediction is mainly down to new vessels entering the market and many more passengers being able to find availability on their chosen ships. P&O is due to launch the 3,600 passenger Britannia next March and Princess Cruises are using Southampton as the home port for the Royal Princess which was christened by the Duchess of Cambridge herself. Royal Caribbean is also upping their game in the UK by introducing the 4,180-passenger titan Anthem of the Seas. To top it all off, MSC has four new ships incoming, previously announced as Project Seaside. MSC intends to bring one of these “revolutionary” new ships – or a Fantasia-class vessel – to the UK. Not only that, but MSC’s gambit seems to have other cruise lines shaking. Carnival Corporation fear prices will be driven down by high competition. Parents, Not Lifeguards!

Saturday 21st June, 2014 – National Drowning Week This Saturday sees the start of National Drowning Prevention week, which is being organised and promoted by the RLSS or the Royal Live Saving Society; (you can see full details of the event on their website http://drowningpreventionweek.org.uk) The aim of the week is to promote knowledge and safety around swimming pools and water in general. The mission statement on their website says – Accidental drowning causes more than 400 UK deaths every year, is the third highest cause of death in children and claims the lives of at least 360,000 people worldwide each year. Around 400 people drown in the UK every year and the RLSS UK aims to prevent drowning through water safety education.   Controversy in the Cruise Industry Pool side safety has been a controversial topic in the cruise industry for a while now. Over the last year or so there have been numerous incidents with children being hurt or killed in cruise line swimming pools where, arguably, a life guard could have helped –   In May this year a six year old boy nearly drowned on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas and had to be airlifted to a French hospital.
