Conference and Seasick!

The week before Christmas was our annual end of year conference. As we are mostly home workers it is a golden opportunity to meet the rest of the team and also see and make friends. It is two and a half full days of conference with presentations from management and cruise lines.

As we are in the cruise industry it was fitting that this was held on a cruise ship sailing from Bristol to Dublin, with an overnight in Dublin before returning to Bristol.

We were privileged enough to be onboard the Marco Polo which is a Cruise and Maritime ship. She was also one of the smallest I have ever been on. She only has the capacity of 800 guests so that is an indication of how small she is. The 22,080grt Bahamian flagged Marco Polo cruise ship with her handsome traditional profile, beautiful teak decks and the distinctive dark blue hull is a classic ocean liner.

So it was the middle of winter and we were in the Irish Sea so what did I expect – smooth sailing! Now I am not 100% sure if it was due to the sea conditions or that I am not used to sailing in a small ship but I suffered on our sailing to Dublin and on our way back to Bristol.

Seasickness is a common disturbance of the inner ear. This is the area of the body that affects your sense of balance and equilibrium. So basically your brain receives conflicting messages about motion and your body’s position in space. The conflicting messages are delivered from your inner ear, your eyes (what you see), your skin receptors (what you feel), and muscle and joint sensors.

People will tell you to drink lots of water, eat a green apple or dry crackers or look out at the horizon. I just head straight to guest services and get the free sea sick tablets they hand out. On this particular occasion that did not even help. So my cruise part of our conference was spent in my cabin where I felt safe and almost human.

Team Legends – My team!

Other than that conference was very informative and well worth the suffering, Dublin was amazing and so was our night of jollies. I am now heading into my third year with cruise.co and still thoroughly enjoy what I do and who I work for.

Happy New Year to you all !!!
