Will Venice Be Flooded With Larger Cruise Ships?

So the four year long debate is finally over as whether cruise ships should be allowed in to Venice and passing through St. Mark’s Basin. Luigi Brugnaro won a close cut election by gaining a 53% of the vote against his rival Felice Casson 47% in Venice this weekend which spells good news for the cruising industry.

At the moment cruise ships over 96,000 tonnes are not permitted into the City following a ban brought in after the 2012 Costa Concordia shipwreck off the coast of Tuscany, but with the new Mayor Brugnaro in place is this about to change?

Luigi Brugnaro a businessman and staunch supporter of the cruise ship industry, went  on to say. ‘In the past that he understood and supported the significance that the cruise holds for the city. He also opposed plans to build an offshore platform for cruise ships to dock off, so that they would moor far outside of Venice.’

So what are your views?

Are you happy about the news that you will still be able to cruise into the ‘Heart of Venice’? Or do you think that the ships should still be banned from the city’s waterways?
