Venetian Carnival

Many people have been to Venice and seen its canals with its gondolas, the beautiful shops with the precious Murano glass, its beautiful streets and the remarkable St. Marc’s Square.

But I’m surprised that not many people know about one of the biggest Venetian traditions that attracts 3 million visitor every year during this period. The Venetian Carnival! Celebrated every year for Lent, 40 days before Easter on Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday up until the following Monday with a big closure. Ends the celebrations with the One of the most important events is the contest for la maschera più bella (“the most beautiful mask”) placed at the last weekend of the Carnival and juried by a panel of international costume and fashion designers.

It’s been a tradition for Centuries dating as far back as the 12th Century and becoming official in the 17th Century.  It is a gathering of people dressed up in masks dancing and celebrating in the streets. The main gathering is in St Mark’s Square where you can admire magnificent costume parades. As a good Italian i have been many times and i can guarantee fun, it’s an event not to be missed. You don’t have to dress up if you don’t want to. You can just buy a beautiful mask in any shop around Venice.

The official Carnival dates for 2014 are from 15th Feb to the 04th March so it’s not too late.
