Caribbean crime rate heightens

CaribbeanRecent reports suggest that cruise lines are becoming increasingly worried with the crime rate in certain Caribbean ports.

It has been said that the crime in St Lucia had become so bad, that cruise lines might consider dropping it from their itineraries. This is something that Norwegian Cruise Line actually did between 2010-2012 due to reported crimes against passengers.

An executive with Carnival Cruise Line reportedly warned a Bahamas tourism official that Carnival was so worried about crime in Nassau, it was considering issuing crime warnings to passengers.

Over the years that I have sold cruise many passengers have relayed stories on their return regards to pick pockets, con men, street violence etc., I remember a few years back a British P&O cruise passenger was actually shot whilst exploring the Ports sights, only to be treated very quickly at the local hospital and got back on board the ship to continue his cruise and recovery on-board.

Having worked out in the Caribbean it is safe to say there are many deprived areas where the locals are waiting for the next ship to arrive to offer their services as local guides, taxi’s, selling local goods, and there will always be the odd person waiting to take advantage of that one excited cruise passenger, distracted by the Islands beauty, and not keeping a close eye on the valuables.

We used to have a saying overseas that many passengers would leave their common sense on the plane. I think this could be very true when it comes to cruising, whilst on board you are in a very safe, carefree environment, no money to worry about, very friendly staff and relaxed fellow passengers, not a care in the world.

Once you step off that ship you need to have your wits about you.

Just be careful when you are exploring Caribbean Ports of call, not everybody may be as friendly and carefree as they may first seem. The same as any other Country really. Be sure to cruise safely this winter.
