Viking longships found on the Mississippi

Viking long-ships have been found in some strange places over the years, Iceland, Scotland, Spain and my personal favourite, beneath the Railway Inn at Moels on the Wirral Liverpool, during renovations. This find resulted in the discovery that the Vikings had settled in that area over 1000 years ago.

Whilst the original Viking ships struck terror into the indigenous populations of many European countries, it is hard to imagine, that they actually made it all the way over to the USA and the mighty Mississippi.  But it is true, well almost………………

Viking cruises are planning to sail this word famous river for the first time in the not too distant future.  Originally 2015 was the target date, but Company chairman Torstein Hagan decided that this would be pushing the boat out a little too far; too early.  This despite the company holding the world record for most launches of new ships in a seven day period.  He also suggested that the design of this new Viking long-ship, would not be the traditional paddle steamer and be far bigger than the companies European sized vessels.

Personally I think Mr Hagan should be mindful as to why paddle steamers were adopted on this river from an old paddle steamer captain called Samuel Langhorne Clemens.  He was better known as, Mark Twain who adopted the cry of safe passage and water depth by the bow pilot. The changing depth and sand banks are notorious on the Mississippi and it is for this reason they used the paddle ships.

All things considered, I still think this would be a wonderful way to see the Mississippi!

Viking cruises are on sale for 2015, you can save £1000 per person with prices start from as little as £995 per person.

Why choose a river cruise? Here are my top 5 reasons….

* No long days at sea

* Panoramic views

* Open seating dining in a casual environment

* Just step ashore, no queues or tenders

* Great value for money

Have you been on a river cruise before? What did you think?

Would you consider a Mississippi river cruise?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Rosie, was wonderful… she answered questions immediately and offered information about pick ups at the airports for the British Isles cruise, however, after looking at the weather we have opted to delay this trip and look at other adventures. Have taken a Viking River cruise and would be interested in the longship cruise at Christmas.
