Penguin Post office – a little piece of Britain in Antarctica

If you like jaw-dropping scenery and the chance to get up close and personal with some of nature’s wonders then a cruise to Antarctica should be on your list.

It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the most vast and uninhabited places in the world.

98% of the land mass is covered with ice.
The only time to travel is between November and March.

The penguin’s eggs start to hatch in December so another good time to visit.

Some of the big cruise line you wouldn’t expect visit Antarctica. Celebrity cruises, Holland America and Silversea are just a few.

But if you want to get right into the Antarctica then Scenic Tours visit a British Antarctica Territory on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Described as a little piece of Britain in the Antarctica, Penguin post office is open every day during the 4 months of summer and has postage stamps, souvenirs and a museum greeting over 1800 tourists every season.

Every year four volunteers are given the job, to run the post office and study the penguin colony. The basic living conditions; no running water or central heating would certainly put me off taking the job! The union jack flag flies above the post office!

Located on Port Lockroy the Post Office is home to the most fantastic scenery and 2,000 Gentoo penguins.

Every year the penguins visit the island, nest, raise their chicks and depart.

A BBC film captured the whole Gentoo breeding cycle, and was aired last week. I was amazed by the beauty of Antarctica.

The scenery literally takes your breath away. The baby penguins were very cute too!

The film captured the different weather conditions from blizzards and days of endless sunlight in between.
This tiny frozen island is home too other creatures too, mainly killers on the prowl for penguins!

Seals, whales and marine life.

Scenic tours. use sturdy inflatable zodiacs so you can experience ice formations, observe wildlife or even step onto icebergs!

You can also combine your cruise with a stay in South America.
Buenos Aires or Santiago are popular choices.
