Is it time to take child safety more seriously?

Following the tragic news that two young children were pulled unconscious from a swimming pool aboard the Norwegian Breakaway, resulting in the death of the youngest, I reflected on the number of times I have been by the pool on various cruise lines and tried to recall if there had been a lifeguard present.  In truth, I just could not say for sure, so decided to research various cruise lines to determine which of them did in fact have pool safety and the provision of a lifeguard as a priority.

After all, the facilities for children onboard ships is a major selling point, with rock climbing walls, water slides, surfing pools, arcades and kids clubs.

The cruise lines market themselves as family friendly in order to attract customers.  It would be strange and a little irresponsible if they had not considered and provided for child safety by the pool. Being a new mum, it makes me a little nervous!

So, what did I find out….

The only cruise line that I could find who provide a lifeguard service is Disney!

The rest indicated that it was not policy to provide lifeguards on board, as it was expected that parents would be looking after the children.

Well there you have it, Just as I thought..

If you are marketing your product as family friendly, you should provide for the health and safety of that family especially the children who are bound to be in and out of the pool all day.  It is not good enough to expect they are being watched by the parents or other passengers.

I would love to hear your views on this subject.. let me know what you think
