Abandoned movie sets you can still visit

For those who do know me know how much i love movies. When i came across some of these i was quite fascinated. Quite a few of them appear on my Bucket List destinations. Sometimes i forget these films were made there or just never knew. I’d love to know if any of you out there have come across any of these? Here’s a few you might recognize.

Star Wars – Tatooine pops up now and again throughout the Star Wars Saga, appearing as a fictional desert Planet. However this set is not much more than a set located in the Deserts of Tunisia and Morocco. Tunisia has recently made an appearance again for tourists. Morocco you can often find on a 7 night Canaries Cruise with Marella Cruises. Click Here.

Popeye – Turns out this was filmed in a very small and colorful village located in Malta. This was built specifically for this film. It was more cost effective for the Producers to leave it standing rather than tear it down.

M*A*S*H – Believe it or not i still watch this when i come across it on T.V and i still love it. The movie itself was filmed 25 miles South of Los Angeles. Now known as Malibu Creek State Park. There are many recognizable parts of it left behind including the famous sign.

Full Metal Jacket – Still a very popular Stanley Kubrik classic. I would never had guessed this but although the movie is set mostly in Vietnam, it was all entirely shot in London. The abandoned Beckton Gas Works where most of the battle scenes were shot is still standing.

Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit – I’ve saved the best for last. The Hobbiton set located near Matamata on the North Island of New Zealand where you can discover the real Middle – Earth. On this private farmland you can see where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies were shot in a fascinating guided tour. This one is very high on my list. check out our Australia and New Zealand Tailor-made itinerary with Lord of the Rings Movie Set Hobbiton Click Here.

If you have done this itinerary before i personally would love to hear about it. Leave me your comments. Don’t forget to visit my Facebook page and message me or call me on 0333 300 2656 if i can tailor something for your needs.
