Formal or Casual Dining – What do you prefer???

One on the most common questions I get asked when talking to customers, especially who are new to cruise is ‘Do I need to get dressed up for dinner?’  and the great thing about cruising it really is down to you!

Now I must admit, I do like the occasional  formal night ,it’s  a really good opportunity to get the glad rags out and enjoy the atmosphere of these evenings however, I also really enjoy the flexibility of the casual dining, especially if I’ve been on a long day excursion and just want to relax and unwind with minimal effort.

There is so much choice now that it’s worth spending that little extra time looking at the dining options and you will definitely find a ship that is perfect for you. There are cruise lines that do still have the traditional dining approach where formal wear is standard however a lot of the cruise lines have adapted to customer requirements and offer both formal and casual dining options. So if you don’t want to go to a formal evening, there is most certainly other dining options available and you won’t go hungry!!

Norwegian Cruise Lines offer a Freestyle Dining. This really does what it says on the tin! You can dine where and when you want and it really is casual. There are lots of restaurants that are complimentary and some speciality restaurants on board should you wish to go for a treat or special occasion. When I was on the Norwegian Breakaway we dined In Taste – Main Dining Room for our evening meal. I wore a nice dress nothing complicated or fancy just what I would wear if I was going to a nice restaurant here and that was great. The next day we ate in the Garden Cafe – a buffet restaurant. This was completely casual and the food was still fantastic with so much choice.

Royal Caribbean also have a great option of Dining Choices, with even more restaurants to try with their Newer Quantum Class Ships. As well as the Main Dining Room where formal dress is requested you could try Windjammer for a casual buffet experience or head to one of the speciality restaurants such as Johnny Rockets for a burger and fries.
