Are we in a world where Social Media is taking over everything that we do? What do you think?

Whatever you do or wherever you go there is always someone that is connecting to Social Media.

There used to be a time when a holiday was described as ‘getting away from it all’, however in this modern world we just cannot seem to live without connecting to home, work or just ‘surfing the web’.

For some people not being able to connect can stir up many emotions, and it isn’t just the ‘youngsters’.

I have had experience of this first-hand whilst working on a ship on more than one occasion.  Ships are moving vessels at sea and we must remember that we are not sat at home with our router close by.  Wi-Fi at sea can be patchy, at best.  It is not the crew’s fault or the Reception team, who seem to handle most of the complaints so remember that next time you do not get a signal.

Using Wi-Fi on cruise ships can require patience.  Servers struggle to connect to satellites, and mountains, being out in the middle of the ocean or bad weather can all have a bearing on how good your connection is.

Cruise ships are improving their satellite connections all the time and the price for Wi-Fi onboard can vary from one ship to the next, depending on what provision or capacity they have.

If you really cannot live without connecting the outside world whilst on a cruise, then take the price into account when booking your cruise.

Our top 5 (as of September 2017):

5: P&O

4: MSC

3: Princess

2: Carnival

In the number 1 spot is Royal Caribbean.

Could you live without the Internet for 7 or 14 nights?  If not, why?

What is the longest you have survived without Wi-Fi, and how did you manage?

Should cruise ships make better provisions for Wi-Fi onboard, or should we be social with each other and not have our noses buried in our phones or tablets?

Let me know what you think.
