Don’t old people do it…?

I must admit that I was horrified when my husband first suggested we try something new and broaden our horizons… with a cruise of all things!

…from everything I had read about cruising, it seemed to be the holiday of choice for the over 65’s and not really something that floated my boat… (pardon the pun). Yet after a little persuading I vowed to at least consider the option and did a little research…

To be honest it was difficult to argue with my husband’s suggestion to stay in a luxurious floating hotel, waking up to a new and exciting destination each day and enjoying the wealth of facilities on board… yet I couldn’t shake the notion of cruising being a generation or two ahead of me.

Over a glass of wine and dreams of destinations that didn’t involve tea-dances, early-bird dinners and backgammon battles on deck, I started to look at the different cruise options available… and it didn’t take me long to realise that I was going to have to admit (begrudgingly) that my husband was right!

Looking at the brochures he had brought home, the quality of the accommodation and facilities aboard these luxurious ocean liners were undeniable… and it became clear very quickly that there is in fact a wide and varied range of cruising options; many specifically aimed at those under 65 & families…

Having admitted to my husband that he was right and that cruising was not something that just old people do, we talked to the experts to ensure that we opted for the most appropriate cruise company for us and then moved on to the exciting bit; choosing the destinations!

We had just 10 days annual leave remaining and the beauty of a cruise would mean we could visit a different destination each day to truly make the most of our holiday time, and the possibilities in terms of destinations were much more varied than I’d anticipated….

…wine-tasting & gastronomy tours taking in Portugal, Spain Italy & the Greek Islands.. Christmas markets in Belgium & Germany with stops in Amsterdam & Paris… Caribbean adventures to tropical ports of calls… ocean-treks to Alaska and the Norwegian Fjords, escapes to exotic Indonesian islands and inspirational journeys as far as Thailand & Japan…

It seems that by choosing to cruise, the world truly is our oyster… we continue to explore this wonderful world and will certainly still be doing it as we get old!
