The Irish Sea in December…. Never Again !!

So I have not long returned from my first annual Christmas Conference here at cruise.co.uk, I haven’t attended the last 2 years so decided I would give it a bash and see what I’ve been missing.

The conference itself was great and it was so nice to meet colleagues face to face.

What wasn’t so great was sailing from Bristol to Dublin and back over the Irish sea mid-December on the Marco Polo which only holds 800 passengers so a relatively small ship. The Sea Sickness was real !! The first night I couldn’t even eat dinner, I had made a great effort to get ready for the fancy dress themed night ahead, managed to get Scotts bar on the top deck at the AFT of the ship to then not be able to stand in my heels because of the movement. I lasted about 30 minutes before heading back to my cabin where I was then so sick I had to crawl from the bathroom to my bed. Lights off at 9 pm and sleeping for 10 pm.

The next day we had arrived on dry land in Dublin, I decided to attend the conference and then head back to my cabin to get ready for the night ahead. It was a great night, cruise.co.uk had hired out the upstairs of Bad Bobs Temple Bar and I made the most of the night as I knew the next night we would be sailing back to Bristol and it was forecasted to be rougher than the first night !!! And yes it was, I was back in my cabin 4pm and I didn’t make it out again.

The Marco Polo its self was fine, I didn’t really manage to stomach much food but from what I did eat it was good. I did do a ship visit last year and wrote a blog about it so if you want to read about the ship then you can click here to read my blog.

  1. My husband and myself were on at the same time as you yes it was a little rough but not enough to make us ill we have sea legs it’s a shame you were ill as you missed seeing your colleagues dressed up in fabulous fancy dress costumes and they were really enjoying themselves ..We felt the ship needed refurbishing ,the staff were nice the food very good and the entertainment was good although one female singer didn’t sing too good ,I would not like to sail on her more than a few days as seating was uncomfortable. I prefer the Magellan .

  2. My husband John and I also travelled on this cruise to Dublin, followed by another 3 day cruise to Cork which included travelling across the Irish Sea between Bristol and Ireland 4, yes four times. Not a good journey if you are prone to sea sickness but we have experienced much worse. Can we suggest, if you are prone make sure you are well medicated from the start. Most Medical Centres have suitable injections which I believe are better than pills. I can tell from Jenny’s post that her seasickness was not due to alcohol consumption because of the timing. However, if you are prone, leave the alcohol alone, it’s not worth it.
The fancy dress party onboard was fantastic and luckily, although we were not members of the conference group, we had slipped a couple of items in our luggage outfits and joined in as Phantom of the Opera & Cleopatra. We were seriously impressed with the range of fancy dress outfits donned by Cruise.co.uk and had a great time with them. Great fun group and it was good to meet so many of you. Marco Polo is one of our favourite ships, (we have tried all the sizes) so far we have used it for The Baltics, Canada in the Fall, Dublin and Cork. We will certainly consider this trip next year, it set us up well for Christmas. Hope to see you all there, we will bring costumes and suggest you let passangers know when they book so they can join in the fun. Look forward to seeing you all next year.

    • The first time I cruised I was sick as a dog. I had an injection which had me up right as rain within 5 minutes. I found out later from someone it was an injection of phenergan, which you can get over the counter. Luckily I have never had cause to use it since.

  3. Hi Jenna
Sorry to hear about your rough crossing Jenna. I think you should push cruise.co to give you a conference in the Caribbean next time!
    Regards
    Derek
