Should Wi-Fi Be Included ??

Remember a time when cruising truly meant getting away from it all?

Its 2016 (well almost 2017) and pretty much everyone owns some sort of smart phone or tablet. the Internet has become such a huge part of our lives that many of us can barely go 15 minutes without checking email, texts and social media.

WI-FI isn’t as important to some as it is to others. we have some people who like to contact family and friends maybe once or twice and ensure them they are having a great time, and then we have the Facebook, Twitter & Instagram lovers who like to post up-dates and pictures every time they eat that yummy meal or drink that amazing looking cocktail at the bar.

So my question is….. Should WI-FI be free on-board your cruise ?

The big golf ball-shaped domes visible on top of cruise ships are protective shells that encase freely moving satellite antennae. These antennae transmit a signal from the ship to a satellite and this is costly to the cruise company, so in that case i doubt very much that any cruise company wouldn’t want to pass some of those costs on to their customers if they wish to use it.

Most cruise lines have different packages available to suit every customers needs and depending what type of stateroom you book you may actually get it for free. Most cruise lines admit that signals can occasionally be weak and browsing speeds slow. Skype and video-streaming are unlikely to work reliably.

Pricing is going down, but don’t expect miracles just yet. If you feel that you need more reliable WI-FI it would be best to look at newer ships with better technology, updating cruise ships with modern technology takes time, and it will take a couple of years for entire fleets to be updated.

For fast, free WI-FI the best advice is to find a good connection in a local bar or restaurant when you disembark, or follow the crew they know all the best spots.
