Big Ship Little Ship Cardboard Box

We have all heard the saying or sang the song big ship, little ship cardboard box and this saying has never been more apparent when discussing the cruising world at the moment. With Mega Ships grabbing the headlines every which way, what about the smaller ships , are they really sat on the sidelines waiting to be noticed.

Just because a ship is bigger does it really guarantee your dream cruise, lets find out Big Ship V Little Ship

Big Ships

What can I say does it really get any better than this when it comes to state of the art cruise ships offering the most innovative and most revolutionary ideas at sea. Royal Caribbean you win hands down and are well worthy winners in the ultimate Mega Ships title. Royal Caribbean ships have it all but nothing more than the Quantum Class ships which are heading our way.  The most futuristic technology never to be seen before will be showcased on these ships and WOW WOW WOW the world is waiting with baited breath. From Virtual Balcony Cabins, to Dodgems to Sky Diving to 360 Pods rotating out to see, plus numerous restaurants, Celebrity Chefs and top west end floor shows, I mean the list really does go on and on. If the calls I have had, to book these Mega Ships for 2015 is anything to go by then the majority definitely agree. Whats interesting to see but I guess is hardly surprising is that its not just families that are booking on these ships, its couples and group of adults of all ages too . So many of you booking in advance wanting to experience what the world has been waiting for.

Norwegian Cruise Lines are undoubtedly a close second with their Breakaway Class of ships, offering waterslides , Ice Bars, world-class award-winning  customized shows, performing in specially designed venues, you really wont believe your eyes once on board.

Little Ships

Carrying a mere 150 passengers or more  the smaller ships may not offer an ice skating rink or a shopping centre but what they do is not only pride themselves in the ultimate in luxury and  service, something that is a little harder to achieve when you are dealing with over 5000 guests, but they offer you an adventure, an unforgettable experience , whether that be helping the crew with the rigging, or taking videos of the dolphins swimming along side you in the ocean , the smaller ships really do make you the adventurer and for that reason that is what sailing on a little ship is all about.

Celebrity Xpedition is a great example , with only 98 passengers on board and a tonnage of 2900, sailing on this ship really is an adventure. She is a destination orientated ship and whilst combining Celebrity Stylishness and small ship ambience, she tours the Galapagos enlightening you to its natural and evolutionary significance. It’s a journey like no other. Its because of their small size that allows these stunning ships to visit many ports of call rarely seen on many large ship itineraries which enables you to experience and have the world at your feet. Are these cruises for you , maybe not but for any of us with the adventurer within us then I suggest if you haven’t tried a smaller ship already to do so, you wont be disappointed.

I myself was recently on a River Cruise where the river boats are quite small, The Royal Crown which I was on, only catered for 88 passengers and although I do like the big ships and everything they offer for me this was pure luxury. Basking in peaceful tranquility in sumptuous surroundings for me was complete bliss. Although only small , I never felt any sense of overcrowding , 88 guests on a small ship you could be forgiven for thinking of too many people in a small area at one time and may be a turn off , but its surprising how you can still feel a sense of intimacy without the feeling of being over shadowed.  For me this really was a winner and really gave me a sense of adventure visiting places I had never heard of and mixing with the locals. I will of course be sailing on many a mega ship in the future as like everyone else I am passionate in experiencing futuristic state of the art innovations that these ships provide, but my heart is definitely with the little ships.

So I guess my question to you is Big Ship Little Ship Cardboard Box? Over to you!

  1. We have only cruised on Celebrity Soltice class ships and found them excellent. We are planning a trip on the Expedition and also a Tall Ship type sailing cruise. The only downside I can see in travelling on much larger ships is the disembarking, particularly in the USA. It takes a couple of hours sometimes because if the number of passengers and the “Stringent” checks being made on everyone.

  2. We much prefer smaller ships, as for us, cruising is mainly about the destinations. We have travelled on some NCL and RCCI, but the smaller – in size not attitude, Azamara ships , and the small-mid size Oceania Marina suit our preferences
