The Rockies to Vancouver

Hello,

I can’t believe another 2 weeks has already passed since my last blog – so much has happened here at work with a huge change to all of our admin systems the time has just flown by… Our new system is great and I am finally mastering it !!… but apologies for anyone who got caught up with waiting longer than usual for a quotation over the last couple of weeks – hopefully all back to normal service now..

Anyway back to recounting my memories from my recent holiday – which now seems like I have been back for ages !!

After our stay in the Rockies (read part 1 if you haven’t)…we drove from our resort in Canmore to Vancouver.  This follows a similar route to that taken by the Rocky Mountaineer train which features in some of our Tailor Made packages and would also have been a real bucket list trip. however not quite within the budget on this occasion with everything else that we wanted to do… so to our trusted rental car it was.

Whilst driving along the main Highway 1, we made a comfort stop near Kicking Horse and timed this absolutely perfectly as we actually saw the Rocky Mountaineer train pass by..

We made the decision that we did not want to stay en-route in Kamloops (where the Rocky Mountaineer passengers stop) as had heard that it really is just an area designed as a stop point for the train.. so we were heading to Kelowna.  This however didn’t quite go to plan, as we thought there would be some lovely motels/hotels along the route so decided not to follow to the “city centre” and before we knew it we were out the other side… After a small de-tour to Peachland – also no accommodation in sight – we re-joined the main route and actually stopped overnight at Merritt, BC at a Comfort Inn which had a lovely Diner/Bar adjacent. Day 1 600 kms – 7 1/2 hours drive (all driven by my amazing Husband) The roads in Canada are amazing but with a highest point of 1790metres and popping ears, the hardest part is keeping to their relatively low speed limits.

Day 2 we were up early for the remaining 4 hour journey to Vancouver and after a lovely breakfast at the hotel, including make your own waffles – we re-loaded the car and I drove until we were on the outskirts of the City, then I passed it over to the more competent driver to take us to our Vancouver City Centre Hotel and to drop off the car rental. Our VW Jetta had served us well, we drove a total of 1700 kms (just over 1000 miles) on fuel costs of about £ 80.00 (and they think their fuel costs are high !!)

Keep following for 24 hours in Vancouver & Alaska Cruise to come…

Frankie
