Sea Sickness

When customers ask about sea sickness I always say don’t worry, it’s very unlikely you will feel ill and experience any bad weather. The ships these days are so big and have great stabilisers its unlikely to happen. But what do you do if it does happen, if you do feel a little sicky and those white horses in the sea are getting larger and larger?

Well, last month I embarked on a mini cruise, As I’m sure you would guess I cruise often, I have been on a high number of cruises including around 10 mini cruises plus sailings in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and I have even crossed the Atlantic but never did I think a ‘normal’ 2 night mini cruise that I take regularly would consist of such rough seas!

I shall tell you what happened, and sparked alarm bells in my head, during the muster drill, whilst sat in the theatre and carrying my lovely orange lifejacket the captain starts his speech, and slips in that the weather forecast isn’t looking to great, there are high winds and swells, if you suffer from sickness i recommend you to take your medication now. Oh dear! After so many cruises and never suffering from sickness I had stopped even packing any kind of sickness tablets or remedies when I cruised, and now when I might need them, I have nothing!

Our meal that evening was early, 6pm so I knew we would still be sailing close to land at this point, which we was so perfect I felt nothing, but by around 8pm it was there! The ship was definitely moving, the waves and swells were high and you could see nobody could walk in a straight line! I headed to the onboard shops to prepare and get the trusted bands, you know the ones that you pop on each wrist only to find they have sold out! Everyone had the same idea and visited the shop before me to buy the bands or tablets!

When I woke the next morning the ship was still rocking, and I have to say i still felt icky. breakfast didn’t go down to well, which was a shame as I love a good cooked breakfast!

But by lunch time, I have to say that I had got used to it, and I sat on deck and ate a burger and chips! I think your body will after a little while get used to the movement and feeling and from then on I felt perfect!

I would have expected to feel like this on my Transatlantic voyage crossing the Atlantic, not a 2 night mini cruise from Southampton to Belgium but you just never know, and no one can control the seas!

If you do suffer from travel sickness, or want to be prepared I would recommend to take something just in case, here are some options;

Travel sickness tablets available from all chemists.

Travel bands, you place these on your wrists.

Ginger sweets, ginger is a great way to combat feeling sick.

If you feel really bad, visit the medical centre onboard they can offer you an injection, or tablet but there will be a charge for this so make sure you have travel insurance.
