Dominican Republic’s new cruise port

The North side of the Dominican Republic is located on the Atlantic ocean, beaches are darker sand in colour , vegetation is lush and green and the ocean is a little rougher as you can imagine than the south of the island located on the Caribbean ocean.

I have travelled to the island 4 times on land base holidays, 3 times in the north and once to the south but I have never visited as a port of call on a cruise.

But that has now changed, a $65 million dollar port is currently being built called ‘Amber Cove’ located on the bay of maimon in Puerto Plata and is due to open in November 2015. The terminal can accommodate upto 8000 cruise passengers and will bring a significant amount of income to the local communities and re-establishing the Dominican as a cruise port of call, It has been over 30 years since the last cruise ship called at Puerto Plata!

The first ship due to call at the port which opens in November 2015 will be the Queen Mary 2, followed by P&O’s Azura in early December 2015.

There are so many options available for customers in the North of the Dominican Republic, as well as spending relaxing days on the beaches, you could head of to swim with dolphins at Ocean World, there are catamaran trips with snorkelling options or for customers looking for something more energetic you can head of white water rafting!

I think the new port is a fantastic opportunity, the island is beautiful and the local people are very friendly and i am sure they will welcome the new tourists once the port opens next year.
