Excursions to do from Southampton.

When going on a cruise you often think of the different excursions you can do at all of the exotic ports of call that you stop at. What I didn’t even think about until now is that Southampton is also sometimes going to be a port that you stop at so you will need things to do once in Southampton. I have lived in Southampton all my life and it is a very nice city. Today I wanted to talk about some of the things that you can do around Southampton if this is one of your ports of call.

Shopping. We have West Quay Shopping centre. This is a huge shopping mall with all the main shops that you can think of. Cheap shops like pound land where you can stock up on goodies before getting back on board to John Lewis where you can treat yourself to any number of new Purchases.

Food Outlet. We have just built west quay watermark. There are so many different restaurants to tickle your taste buds. From Chinese to Indian, Jamie Oliver to Tji Fridays.

Outside of the main city of Southampton, there are plenty of places you can visit within an hour journey. This is too far at all if you think it will take you 2 hours from Le Harve to Paris or 1.5 hours from Civitavecchia port to Rome.

Portsmouth, Winchester, Salisbury and Stonehenge are all within an hour and can be visited independently by public transport or with your own private car and driver.

Although Southampton is often labelled as a cruise port for London, it is 65 miles away and for a day trip 4 hours would need to be put aside for the travelling to and from London.

Windsor, Bath,  the scenic Cotswolds region or Oxford are possible by private car and much closer than London.

Salisbury is famous for Salisbury Cathedral and the Magna Carta within the Chapter House.

Salisbury is a very welcoming small city with a historic medieval city centre.

Stonehenge

Salisbury is the closest town/city to world famous Stonehenge. The Stonehenge Tour Bus runs at least hourly between Salisbury and Stonehenge and also visits Old Sarum an old iron age hill fort with much history itself.

Bath

The Roman Baths at Bath

The Roman Baths at Bath

Bath is a little further away, around 90-100 minutes by car but well worth the effort – there is so much to see and do. The most common comment from our visitors is that must come back one day for an extended visit. Stonehenge is about half-way on the route to Bath.

London

London is possible but its best part of a 2 hour journey in both directions, so do factor this in.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth is the home of the British Navy and the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a major attraction with a wide variety of things to see,do and experience..

Winchester

Winchester like Salisbury is known for its medieval Cathedral, one of the finest in England and welcoming city centre. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur. There are several trains each hour between Southampton and Winchester each hour taking 15-20 minutes.
