New Arrival

So yesterday something very exciting happened and I became ‘mammy’ to my new house mate, Lady, an 11 week old Jack Russell Terrier puppy!!!! I went to the dog pound to rescue a black Labrador puppy who was looking for a new ‘forever’ home, but he was snapped up before I got there. The dog warden told me about a new wee puppy they had gotten the day before for re-homing from an elderly couple who couldn’t look after her. I went to look at her and she was such a wee toot and in a cage with a HUGE older dog and I just could not leave her there. My mammy and sister were out in the car so I took the puppy out to get their thoughts and she bonded with everyone straight away, oh and re-leaved herself straight away on my top as well – the first of many to come people are telling me!!

How would Lady get on with me and was this to be the start of a beautiful relationship or a traumatic experience for us both?

When you take on a pound dog there is always the unknown. There is no owner to have a chat with about their temperament, feeding habits or most importantly toilet habits. But, I was eager to give her a chance and took a leap of faith.

So the last two days have passed in a merry blur of doggy kisses, feeding, playing and the inevitable ‘accidents’ as we negotiate our way through our first days together. We have visited the other family dogs twice now and both times went far better than expected, although I think Honey the very pampered Shih Tzu is feeling her crown slipping away, so we are keen to spread the love equally to nip any early jealously in the bud.

I will keep you all updated with a monthly ‘Doggy Diary’ about Lady’s new experiences and my thoughts and feelings of how it is all going and most importantly how we are getting on with the potty training!!!!

If any of you have any words of wisdom or handy tips of training puppies I would love it if you share them with me to help us get through these first few weeks together and make them as smooth as possible – for us both!
