English, American or Italian?

There are a variety of cruise lines out there these days with so many to choose from but what makes you choose a particular cruise

line?

Do you go for the British option as you know where you are with them or do you go for American as usually do things bigger & better?

How about European, Spanish or Italian – known for their cuisine and stylish ships.

Did you know that Winston Churchill preferred to travel on an Italian cruise line – I was surprised when I heard this as thought he would be British through & through, his reason was quite funny actually and made me think of ‘Titanic’ – read on & you will understand why!

Not sure how true this story may be but made me giggle all the same…

From “The Wit and Wisdom of Winston Churchill” by James C. Humes:

Late in his life, Sir Winston took a cruise on an Italian ship. A  journalist from a New York newspaper approached the former prime  minister to ask him why he chose to travel on an Italian line when the Queen  Elizabeth under the British flag was available.

Churchill gave the  question his consideration and then gravely replied: “There are three things I  like about Italian ships. First, their cuisine, which is unsurpassed. Second,  their service, which is quite superb. And then — in time of emergency — there is  none of this nonsense about women and children first.”

So he prefers an Italian ship so he can be off first in case of an emergency which make me think back to the Costa Concordia – the captain of that ship was soon off the ship after it is believed that he caused it to sink by going of course then left passngers & crew to deal with the tragedy of losing such a fantastic ship! Even after being asked to return to the ship he didn’t.  I know how I would feel if the captain abandoned ship before all passengers & crew…

I would love to hear your thoughts on this, which do you prefer?
