Blown away by the Breakaway

This is me literally blown away from how amazing the new Ncl Breakaway really was.

Myself and my colleagues were lucky enough to be invited down to Southampton to spend a night on board this amazing ship and we weren’t disappointed.  Pulling up to the port the size of the ship is something else and towers above you in all its splendor  with row upon row of balcony’s it really is very impressive.  Once on board we wasted no time in fully exploring the ship but where to start as there was so much to see and do if you sailed on her and never left the ship you would still be finding hidden gems on board   We started with the Spa and if you enjoy your spa breaks and relaxation then this is the place for you.  The floor to ceiling windows make it such a light and bright area its very peaceful and you can be sure of keeping warm in here as they have heated loungers for you to relax on while you wait for treatments or simply escape the outside world.

If the Spa isn’t your thing and you’re more of an action Alan then you will be right at home on the Breakaway finding the big kid in you.  The water park up on deck seventeen will see you going down one of the fastest water slides at sea and there are five to choose from.  If you come off these with bikini intact them you can pop into one of the four hot tubs to recover.  I did take my cosi to sample these slides but chickened out so cant post any action shots unfortunately

Once you have dried off from the slides you can then venture over to the sports complex and challenge yourself with the largest at Sea rope course where you navigate over different obstacles mid-air.  If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground then you can have a go of the 9 hole mini golf, basketball court, rock climbing wall and bungee trampoline.

Another firm favorite has to be the Haven experience.  If you have booked a Haven suite then you can take full advantage of the Haven courtyard which is exclusively for you with a private pool and the most amazing lounge areas and cabanas for you to relax and enjoy.

Getting cosy in the Haven
We spent most of the day walking  around the rest of the ship looking at various grades of cabins and as you can imagine at this point we were really quite peckish so decided to go to the Garden cafe to have a little bite before the main event of Dinner (which I will go into detail about in a minute).  This is a buffet style experience and the choice was brilliant.  I tried to stay calm as didn’t want to ruin dinner so I had a selection of salads and a slice of pizza.  They had lots of cold and hot options and really catered for everyone.  It is very bright and modern in here and a really good choice if you want to have a little snack or indulge in a few different dishes.
Feeling in need of a little drink after all this hard work (Honest !!!) we decided to stop off at the bar and Grill O’Sheehans which is the place to hang out and people watch.  It has a real pub atmosphere in here and while sipping on a beer we played a game of pool (which I won of course) and they also have darts and billiards in here with a giant two storey screen for sports and movies.
Finally we finished off the day by booking into the specialty restaurant Teppanyaki as we had heard good things and wanted to give it a try.  The atmosphere in here is really fun and lively as dinner is accompanied with a show of flying eggs being caught in the chef’s hats and knifes and spatulas being tinged and banged on the grill gets everyone cheering with encouragement of these chefs showing off their skills.
I personally ordered a seafood meal which consisted of Lobster tail, scallops and calamari.  It was cooked in front of me on the grill and perfect amounts of each made it such an enjoyable experience as I came out of their feeling very happy but not too stuffed.  There are so many wonderful dining experiences on board that you really will be spoilt for choice and you can choose from a nice treat in one of the specialty restaurants or be just as spoiled in the main restaurants which are freestyle and open for you to go whenever you fancy.  A great thing about the Breakaway was dotted around the ship they had touch screen maps which showed you exactly where you were on the ship.
They also had categories for you to select such as the restaurants and it then indicated weather that particular restaurant was full or fine for space.  This gadget is a really smart move as you can then plan exactly where you want to go and if like me you get a it lost on these bigger ships it’s nice to know you are only a touch screen away from help if you struggle to find your cabin.
My overall experience on board the Ncl Breakaway was a great one.  I felt like I needed at least another week on board to sample everything but unfortunately my bosses were having none of it and I didn’t end up stowing away on the sailing over to New York.  Being based in New York she will be a really good ship to tailor make holidays with as well so if you fancy doing a few nights in New York and then sailing on her it’s easy to arrange and will get your cruise holiday off to a brilliant start.  I couldn’t find anything at all that I didn’t like about the ship and I really would recommend for all as there’s so much choice and a really good selection for young and old.
