White Walkers & Dragons, It Can Only Mean……

Yes, it is that time when the new season of Game Of Thrones is back on TV.  I am a huge fan of this show. If you have not watched it before you really should try it. In a nutshell, it is about a group of different families all trying to be top dog and of course there are lots of twists and turns! A brilliant show which really will make you want more and more!

The show is also filmed in lots of different destinations, which I am sure some of you will have been to before. These destinations are certainly experiencing a “boom” in tourists with even more, now that the new season is upon us. So, where in the world are they?

The medieval city of Girona in Spain is going to feature heavily in this new series. Girona cathedral in particular is one of the primary filming locations. Most of us will know Girona from the old Spanish package holiday boom in the seventies and early eighties (if your by age of course!). It is a lovely city and the cathedral dates from the 11th century, certainly somewhere to look out for if your in that area.

Dubrovnik has been used from the start of the show, as the city of Kings Landing. A beautiful city, a Unesco world heritage sight with magnificent city walls, beautiful harbour and stunning scenery. Hard to believe this city was bombed heavily in 1991 in the uprising over there. One destination I would definitely recommend you to visit.

County Antrim in Northern Ireland is also one of the sites used in filming, as well as Iceland as a backdrop for the White Walkers – these are the “feared” people in the series!

I also read that in Girona they are expecting loads of tourists so much so they have got there very own Game Of Thrones guides to show you around. Not unexpected though is it? You can go to the bakery in New York used on Sex And The City and a few years ago I went on a Soprano’s tour to New Jersey!!

So, for the next few weeks I will be lost in the lands of this show, but the best thing is after it has finished I can visit these destinations myself. Roll on Monday!!
