SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS OR CRUISE AGAIN… FOR FREE!!!

The aurora borealis (or northern lights) is a spectacular natural phenomenon which can occasionally be seen in the night sky over Britain. Once seen, it is never forgotten.

So, Hurtigruten’s recent promotion to see the Northern Lights or cruise again…    for FREE, is a bold offer indeed.

I know this is a truly spectacular event to witness although, of the many times that I have personally cruised the Norwegian Fjords, the North Cape, the Arctic Circle, to the most northern most post office on earth, to Spitsbergen…      I have never managed a trip to see the Northern Lights.

Trips to this part of the world to see this natural phenomenon are few and far between and for any cruise line to offer such a guarantee, they must be either very confident or plain stupid. Which is it? You make your own judgement.

What I can tell you is that my own mother-in-law recently cruised this area, with Hurtigruten, booked by me. She did her homework and knew much about the Northern Lights, but what she saw, she really could not believe how spectacular this sight is. Of course, the razzle dazzle of the Northern Lights does not perform to order. It happens when you might not expect it.

Passengers on cruises with Hurtigruten expect to be awake at crazy times to see this phenomenon. They all come out on deck, armed with cameras and hope to catch this spectacle. They have to be lucky. My mother-in-law was not. She saw it all and was absolutely mesmerised by what she saw, but simply could not capture the spectacle on camera.

Hurtigruten are not the only cruise line that cruise this area, but they are the only ones brave enough to make this offer.
