Generation Cruise

Baby boomers, millennials, generation X or Y – forget weather you are 55 or 5 years of age, we are all lucky to be born in generation cruise. There is now such a diversity in the market. In the past, a cruise was always considered something the wealthy does or the older generation.

A record number of people are now cruising (according to Clia – just short of 2 million from the U.K. in 2017). There is a record amount of ships on order and a cruise line to suit any taste. Grandparents can take their grandchildren on holiday, couples can do the cultural thing, families and friends can holiday together and even the solo traveller is catered for.

Royal Caribbean’s recently refurbished Independence of the Seas is a classic example of a line that caters for all. For one thing, she sails out of Southampton, which is much easier than flying. She now has water slides, an escape room, laser tag and bungee trampoline to keep the younger generation occupied whilst the older generation relax in the solarium. Both generations can come together at one of her many restaurants or enjoy the theatre and ice shows.

If the older generation wants something on their own they can try one of Fred Olsen’s cruises which cater to a more mature clientele. If there is a group of friends NCL has an anything-goes attitude where people wear what they like and eat when they want.

It is clear to see just how the cruise industry has evolved over the years. Technology has paved the way for large, more manoeuvrable, robust vessels. Whilst modern lifestyles and living have created facilities to match those of international hotels. Whether it’s sending an email off the coast of Alaska or rock climbing at 100ft above sea level. Anything is now possible onboard a grand modern cruise ship.
