Finally, Seaworld make the decision to stop exploiting animals
If you’ve read my posts before, you’ll be well aware of my feelings towards SeaWorld, made even stronger after the Blackfish documentary which I wrote about here (please be advised that this contains some pictures, footage and text some people may find upsetting or distressing).
SeaWorld announced on 17th March, after a huge amount of pressure that’s been placed on them. that they’re going to stop their killer whale shows. In a statement they said ‘times are changing and we are changing with them’ adding that the current Orca generation kept at the park will be the last.
The killer whales currently in our care will be the last generation of killer whales at SeaWorld. The company will end all orca breeding as of today.
We always put the health and well-being of the whales first. We have the leading veterinary and scientific experts in the country to advise us on how to do this in a way that puts the health and well-being of the whales first.
We love our whales and so do many of our visitors and this is about doing the best thing for our whales, our guests, our employees and SeaWorld.

The pressure to announce this decision has probably increased since the news of Tilikums ill health surfaced and teh park found themselves in the spotlight again. Tilikum is the whale famed for drowning one of his ‘handlers’ a few years ago after dragging her to the bottom of the pool and holding her there.
Tilikum is said to have a bacterial infection in his lungs for which, there is no cure.
Although Tilikum’s life has been one of almost solitude and imprisonment, there’s some comfort in the fact that no other whales will have to suffer his misfortune at SeaWorlds hands.
